What is a contracting apprentice?

Contracting Apprentices are individuals who are learning the skills and knowledge needed to work in contract management or procurement roles, typically within government or large organizations. They participate in a structured apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Their responsibilities may include assisting with contract drafting, reviewing proposals, ensuring compliance with regulations, and supporting negotiation processes. By the end of their apprenticeship, they gain practical experience and a foundational understanding of contract administration, making them well-prepared for roles as contract specialists or managers.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a contracting apprentice?

To thrive as a Contracting Apprentice, you need a strong understanding of procurement principles, attention to detail, and basic business or finance knowledge, often supported by a relevant associate's or bachelor's degree. Familiarity with contract management software, government acquisition systems, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and manage multiple tasks efficiently. These competencies are crucial for ensuring compliance, minimizing risk, and supporting successful contract execution in dynamic work environments.

What challenges do contracting apprentices face during their training, and how can they overcome them?

Contracting Apprentices often encounter challenges such as learning complex procurement regulations, adapting to fast-paced project deadlines, and balancing on-the-job training with coursework. To overcome these hurdles, it's helpful to proactively seek mentorship from experienced contracting professionals, stay organized with task lists, and regularly review training materials. Open communication with supervisors and participating in team discussions can also accelerate learning and help apprentices feel more supported as they build confidence in their role.

Join the Team at Electrical Solutions, Inc.

Electrical Solutions, Inc. (ESI) is a growing electrical contractor based in Sauk Rapids, MN. We specialize in commercial electrical construction, service work, industrial projects, security camera systems, access control, network infrastructure, and specialty low-voltage systems.

We're looking for an experienced, motivated Apprentice Electrician who enjoys variety, takes pride in quality workmanship, and wants to build a long-term career with a company that's continuing to grow.

No two days are the same. One day you may be troubleshooting a commercial service call, the next leading a new construction project, installing security systems, or helping complete an industrial electrical installation.

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable Apprentice Electrician to join our growing team. This position involves hands-on electrical work in both service and construction environments, including troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, and customer interaction.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to grow professionally, take on additional responsibility, and advance into a Journeyman Electrician, Lead Electrician, Project Manager, or other leadership role as ESI continues to expand.

Job Responsibilities

Electrical Installation & Service

  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial and industrial electrical systems.
  • Perform service work and diagnose electrical issues safely and efficiently.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and electrical drawings.
  • Install lighting, power distribution, controls, security cameras, access control, and other low-voltage systems as needed.
  • Ensure all work complies with NEC requirements and company safety standards.

Project Support

  • Work closely with project managers and fellow electricians to complete projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed.
  • Assist with material takeoffs and communicate material needs.
  • Represent ESI professionally while working directly with customers.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Work independently while supporting apprentices and other electricians.
  • Mentor apprentices and help develop the next generation of electricians.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Contribute ideas to improve efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Requirements:

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Professional attitude and commitment to quality workmanship

Preferred

  • Industrial and/or Commercial electrical experience
  • Experience with security cameras, access control, networking, or low-voltage systems

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Performance-based wage increases
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement plan with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Advancement opportunities into leadership positions
  • Stable, year-round work
  • Supportive team environment where your ideas and experience are valued

Why Join ESI?

We're not looking to simply fill a position—we're looking for someone who wants to become part of our team for years to come.

At ESI, you'll work on a wide variety of projects, have opportunities to continue learning, and help build a growing company that values quality workmanship, teamwork, and long-term relationships with both employees and customers.
