What is contract work?

Contract Work is an arrangement between an employer and a person who works as an independent contractor—not as an official employee of the company. Businesses and government organizations hire independent contractors to perform all types of work—computer engineering, marketing, technical or content writing, construction, and more. If you have skills that companies need, then you can build a career as an independent contractor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Manager, you need a strong understanding of contract law, negotiation, and risk management, often backed by a bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with contract management software, document tracking systems, and sometimes certifications like Certified Commercial Contracts Manager (CCCM) is typical. Exceptional attention to detail, communication, and problem-solving skills help you navigate complex agreements and foster productive relationships. These competencies ensure contracts are compliant, mitigate risks, and support organizational objectives effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by contract employees, and how can they be managed effectively?

Contract employees often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new work environments, managing multiple projects or clients simultaneously, and dealing with less job security compared to permanent roles. To manage these effectively, it's important to establish clear communication with supervisors, clarify project expectations upfront, and proactively network within the organization. Staying organized and flexible can help contract workers deliver high-quality results while building valuable professional relationships that might lead to future opportunities.

Job description

What You’ll Do

Relate Search has partnered with a growing engineering and construction organization to identify a contracts and risk professional who will support the full contract lifecycle while helping strengthen construction-related insurance and risk management processes. Working closely with the legal team, project teams, brokers, carriers, vendors, and subcontractors, this role will review agreements, coordinate contract execution, and help ensure insurance requirements are satisfied. The position is designed for someone who can think critically, provide practical business guidance, identify risk, and recognize when an issue should be escalated to counsel. This is an opportunity to help build greater structure around contracts, insurance, risk, processes, and legal operations within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and support the full contract lifecycle, including review, negotiation, approvals, execution, and administration of agreements with owners, subcontractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • Partner with project teams and the legal team to review contract and insurance requirements, identify issues, provide practical guidance, and escalate matters requiring additional legal review.
  • Support the organization’s construction-related insurance program by coordinating with brokers and carriers on coverage, renewals, documentation, claims-related matters, and large-project insurance requirements.
  • Review certificates of insurance and related documentation for contractual compliance, identify discrepancies in coverage, limits, endorsements, or expiration dates, and coordinate resolution with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Improve contract and risk-management operations by maintaining organized repositories, templates, and resources; supporting vendor and subcontractor pre-qualification; and contributing to audits, reporting, compliance reviews, and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of relevant experience in contracts, risk management, insurance, legal operations, or a related field.
  • Construction industry experience with exposure to construction-related insurance and/or risk management is required for the target profile.
  • Strong understanding of how contractual requirements and insurance obligations work together, including the ability to review agreements and identify issues requiring additional legal or business review.
  • Strong judgment, organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while knowing when matters should be escalated to counsel.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, consultative approach to working with project teams, vendors, subcontractors, brokers, and internal stakeholders.

Perks & Benefits

  • Annual performance bonus and annual profit-sharing opportunity.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • Paid time off / open vacation policy and retirement plans.
  • Hybrid schedule with three in-office days and two remote days each week.
