Contract Web Accessibility Testing information

What are some common challenges faced by contract web accessibility testers, and how can they be addressed?

Contract web accessibility testers often encounter challenges such as working with incomplete documentation, tight project deadlines, and varying levels of accessibility knowledge among development teams. To address these, testers should prioritize clear communication with clients, document findings thoroughly, and stay updated on the latest WCAG guidelines. Collaborating with developers and designers early in the process can also help integrate accessibility best practices and reduce remediation work later on.

What is the difference between Contract Web Accessibility Testing vs Contract Web QA Tester?

AspectContract Web Accessibility TestingContract Web QA Tester

Search & ComparisonSpecialized in accessibility testing, compliance focusGeneral web testing, broader QA responsibilities

Contract Web Accessibility Testing specialists focus on ensuring websites meet accessibility standards like WCAG, emphasizing compliance and user experience for disabled users. Contract Web QA Testers perform broader testing tasks, including functionality, performance, and usability across web applications. While both roles involve testing, accessibility testers specialize in accessibility compliance, whereas QA testers cover a wider range of quality assurance activities.

What is contract web accessibility testing?

Contract web accessibility testing involves hiring external specialists to evaluate and ensure that a website or web application is usable by people with disabilities, according to standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These testers assess websites for barriers that might impede users with visual, auditory, cognitive, or motor impairments. They provide detailed reports on issues found and recommendations for making the site more accessible. Engaging contract testers helps organizations meet legal requirements and improve user experience for all visitors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Web Accessibility Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Web Accessibility Tester, you need expertise in web accessibility standards (such as WCAG), HTML/CSS, and experience with manual and automated testing, often supported by relevant certifications like CPACC or WAS. Familiarity with accessibility evaluation tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE) and assistive technologies (such as screen readers) is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help testers clearly identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure digital content is inclusive and compliant with legal standards, improving usability for all users.

  • Partner with Product Engineers, Developers, cross-functional teams, senior designers, and design system partners to shape component behavior, interaction patterns, and visual design
  • Create high-fidelity design specifications, including component states, motion, accessibility requirements, and usage guidance
  • Contribute to a cohesive, modern design system by refining reusable patterns, applying established design system standards, and identifying opportunities to improve component usability, clarity, and consistency across Esri applications
  • Advocate for accessibility, usability, and inclusive design through research, testing, and WCAG 2.1 / Section 508 best practices
  • Clearly communicate design intent, decisions, and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting adoption through documentation, demos, and close collaboration with engineering

Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience designing complex, enterprise-grade web applications or design systems, preferably in SaaS or GIS-related domains
  • Portfolio demonstrating component-based design, systems thinking, and attention to visual and interaction detail
  • Experience designing for scalability and reuse
  • Proficiency in Figma and component-based design workflows
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 / Section 508)
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience partnering closely with engineers
