As of Aug 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for contract therapist in the United States is $43.75, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $30.29 and $51.92 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a contract therapist?

A contract therapist is a mental health professional who works on a temporary or project-based basis under a contract agreement. They typically provide therapy services in various settings, such as clinics or schools, and may work independently or through staffing agencies, often requiring relevant licensure and flexibility in scheduling.

How do contract therapists typically balance multiple clients and manage their schedules effectively?

Contract therapists often work with a diverse client base, sometimes across different organizations or locations, so strong time management and organizational skills are essential. They usually set their own schedules, which allows for flexibility but also requires proactive planning to avoid overbooking or burnout. Many contract therapists use digital scheduling tools and maintain clear communication with clients and referring agencies to coordinate appointments and documentation. Staying organized not only helps with work-life balance but also ensures consistent, high-quality care for clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract therapist?

To thrive as a Contract Therapist, you need a relevant master's degree (such as in counseling, social work, or psychology), state licensure, and strong clinical assessment skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telehealth platforms, and practice management software is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, active listening, and self-motivation are soft skills that help therapists build trust and manage their caseloads independently. These abilities are essential to provide effective client care, maintain compliance, and succeed in flexible, often autonomous contract roles.

About FCC:

We’ve been in business since 2012, and since that tim,e we have developed the philosophy that our role is to provide our clients with a comfortable and supportive environment conducive to insight, healing, and personal growth. FCC’s core values include compassion, integrity, respect, accountability, and teamwork.

We are primarily an insurance-based practice, although we do have some clients who choose to self-pay. We typically work with children as young as 5 years old, adolescents, teenagers, adults, as well as some senior adults.  The clients we work with most often are voluntarily seeking services for depression or a mood disorder, anxiety, grief/loss, family/relationship difficulties, OCD, ADHD, or adjusting to different transition periods in life. The majority of our clients are high-functioning individuals.

The primary mode of therapy being provided is individual therapy sessions. Family therapy sessions are provided too.

Why Join the FCC Team:

Well, we may be a little biased, but we think our team is pretty awesome and that FCC is a great place to work! Just check out the feedback from our team members to see for yourself! Our team is comprised of a caring, fun, collaborative group of licensed therapists and administrative staff.

A huge benefit of joining our team is the security of being consistently provided with a full caseload of clients with whom you enjoy working the most. We believe it is extremely important that we pair incoming clients with the therapists who have the skills and experience to work most effectively with them. This also more often leads to an overall good clinical fit and therapeutic outcome. So you do not need to spend time marketing yourself.  We do that for you! That allows you to focus your time on what you enjoy most…providing therapy.

And, we consistently receive ongoing requests for our services, so much so, that the demand for our services is higher than we can currently meet.  So, we would love to bring on additional, exceptional clinicians to better serve the needs of our community.

Next, our group practice offers you the experience of private practice without all the expense or isolation and a ton of support! We also offer our clinicians the flexibility to provide all or some of their sessions securely via telehealth from the comfort of their own home.  Learn more about us at www.friendswoodcc.com
