Job Title: Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)
 
Specialty: Sterile Processing Service (SPS) - decontamination, prep & packaging, sterilization, tracking, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME)
 
Place of Work (City/State): Fresno, CA
 
Site: VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS)
 
location: Fresno VA Medical Center, 2615 E. Clinton Ave, Fresno, CA 93703
 
Duration: 12 months contract
 
Shift Schedule: 5 days/week, 8-hour shifts.
  • Day: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Evening: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Night: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM
How many shifts needed per month: ~20–22 shifts per month per tech (Mon–Fri, 40 hrs/week)
 
Credentialing / Onboarding time: 6 weeks to 8 weeks
 
Certifications: One of the following, current/active (mandatory):
  • HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) — CRCST or equivalent
  • CBSPD
  • BLS
Education: High school diploma/GED standard
 
Experience needed: Minimum 2 years SPS experience. Must read, write, and communicate clearly in English
 
Special Skills needed:
  • Decontamination of complex instrumentation
  • Inspection, assembly, and packaging of specialty surgical trays
  • Operation of all sterilization systems (autoclaves, V-Pro, automated washers, ultrasonic cleaners) and interpretation of sterilization indicators
  • Endoscope reprocessing (if applicable)
  • Case cart preparation and inventory management
  • Documentation/tracking per AAMI ST79, VHA directives, facility SOPs
Responsibilities:
  • Clean and decontaminate reusable medical instruments per AAMI, AORN, FDA, OSHA, and MIFU standards using appropriate PPE
  • Inspect instruments for biological residue, staining, pitting, rust, cracking, damage, and functionality
  • Assemble, package, and label instrument sets; maintain sterility
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment; verify and document all cycles
  • Maintain records of decontamination, sterilization, equipment testing, and distribution (CensiTrac)
  • Transport soiled/clean RME through the medical center; may assist training new staff
