What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, CI/CD systems, and cloud platforms, as well as knowledge of frameworks and languages such as JavaScript, Python, or Java, is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and projects. These abilities ensure you can deliver quality solutions efficiently while meeting diverse client expectations in dynamic environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by contract software engineers during training programs, and how can they overcome them?

Contract software engineers in training programs often face challenges such as quickly adapting to diverse tech stacks, integrating into new team cultures, and managing time effectively to meet project deadlines. Since contract roles are typically short-term, there’s often pressure to ramp up rapidly and deliver results with minimal onboarding. To overcome these challenges, engineers should proactively seek clarification, leverage available documentation, and communicate regularly with team members to ensure alignment. Embracing continuous learning and being open to feedback can also help contract engineers thrive in varying environments.

What is the difference between Contract Software Engineer Training vs Contract Software Engineer?

In contrast, Contract Software Engineer involves working on actual projects for clients, applying skills in real-world environments. Both roles are essential in the software industry but serve different purposes in career progression.

What is Contract Software Engineer Training?

Contract Software Engineer Training refers to specialized programs or courses designed to prepare individuals to work as software engineers on a contract basis. These trainings typically cover essential programming languages, software development methodologies, and tools, along with insights into freelancing, contract negotiation, and project management. The goal is to equip participants with both technical and business skills needed to succeed as independent software engineers. Such training can help professionals adapt to diverse projects, industries, and client needs. It is ideal for those looking to pursue flexible, project-based work in the software development field.

Job description

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is seeking a hands-on Lead Software Engineer to drive end-to-end solution delivery for major retail platforms.

In this role, you will own hands-on implementation (feature development, technical design, code reviews), engagement leadership (client-facing technical lead, trade-off decisions, mentoring), and operational ownership (delivery sign-off, post-release support) of high-impact solutions, translating business requirements into working software you help build. You will drive Dual-Track Agile processes, contributing to the Discovery Track through rapid prototyping and feasibility validation, and leading the Delivery Track to ensure quality, traceability, and measurable outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a senior software engineer who codes daily, prototypes proactively, and integrates AI/agent workflows across the software lifecycle-from analysis and design to testing, documentation, and code generation-while bringing the technical leadership to drive client engagements forward. You will mentor teams, make critical technical trade-offs, and take full accountability for delivery sign-off and post-release support.

This role requires strong retail platform domain knowledge (POS systems, store operations), cloud-native development experience, and fluency with generative and agentic AI tools to accelerate delivery while preserving code quality and architectural integrity. You will be a key driver of engineering excellence, ensuring solutions are both innovative and operationally robust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instrument and leverage AI/agentic workflows in your daily development to accelerate design, prototyping, code generation, test-case creation, specification drafting, and automated validation across the software lifecycle.
  • Apply AI-assisted development practices in your own work, model best practices for the team, and ensure ethical compliance and responsible integration of generative AI tools.
  • Own end-to-end solution delivery across Discovery and Delivery Tracks, personally building validated prototypes, contributing to formal designs, decomposing work into deliverables, and shipping accepted technical implementations.
  • Drive the Discovery Track under Dual-Track Agile by writing working prototypes and demoing solutions to validate feasibility and align stakeholders before full implementation.
  • Translate discovery outcomes into delivery backlog items and partner with implementation teams to ensure design intent, code quality standards, and non-functional requirements are preserved throughout delivery.
  • Contribute to technical design across products and integrations: produce ADRs, interface contracts, data models, sequencing diagrams, migration/rollback plans, and traceability matrices, partnering with architects on broader governance.
  • Serve as the primary technical lead in client engagements: facilitate workshops, present technical solutions, make trade-off decisions, drive approvals, and act as a subject-matter expert for assigned platform areas.
  • Personally implement critical components and complex features in modern retail platform stacks, set the bar for code quality through your own work, and review and approve deliverables from implementation teams.
  • Apply and reinforce engineering standards, reusable integration patterns, and non-functional requirements (security, scalability, observability) across client solutions.
  • Mentor and upskill engineers on AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, specification-driven design, and platform best practices, primarily through pair programming, code reviews, and example-driven leadership.
  • Contribute to platform and product strategy, identifying reusable assets, API-first designs, and technical gaps requiring investment.
  • Own risk analysis and mitigation for technical decisions, including backward compatibility, data integrity, and compliance constraints.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Applying and utilizing AI-assisted tools and workflows (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) for design, coding, test generation, and documentation.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience with current, daily hands-on coding and prototyping in modern technology stacks.
  • 5+ years building cloud-native, microservices, or event-driven systems, with experience in Azure or equivalent cloud platforms.
  • Strong proficiency in technology stacks such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript, React/Vue.
  • Proven experience owning end-to-end solution delivery, including design, implementation, and post-release operational accountability for medium-to-large projects.
  • Track record of building production code, prototypes, and reference implementations to validate solution feasibility.
  • Strong experience with REST/OpenAPI, messaging platforms, and relational/non-relational databases (SQL/NoSQL).
  • Hands-on proficiency with CI/CD, containerization, Docker, Kubernetes, deployment tooling, automated testing, and AI/agentic workflows to accelerate the software lifecycle.
  • Practical experience with generative AI and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) with measurable impact on delivery.
  • Excellent stakeholder communication skills, able to facilitate workshops, present technical solutions, and collaborate across business and engineering teams.
  • Proven leadership in mentoring engineers, conducting thorough code reviews, and championing engineering best practices across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong retail platform domain knowledge (POS systems, store operations) is highly desirable.
  • Certifications such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect, or equivalent cloud credentials.
  • Strong understanding of advanced security best practices and compliance requirements in enterprise systems.
  • Experience leading Dual-Track Agile processes, managing both Discovery and Delivery Tracks, and translating discovery outcomes into actionable backlog items.
  • Experience contributing to platform strategy, reusable assets, and API-first designs.
  • Expertise in formal or machine-readable specifications (OpenAPI, UML+OCL, TLA+, or equivalent) to guide implementation and enable automated validation.
