Job description

Build your best future with the Johnson Controls team. As a global leader in smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, we help reimagine how buildings perform to serve people, places, and the planet. Join a winning team where your ideas are heard and your work contributes to meaningful outcomes.

Our teams support a wide range of industries across the globe, and we create opportunities to grow through meaningful projects and learning experiences. We also strive to support employees' physical, financial, and emotional wellbeing.

Become part of the Johnson Controls family and help deliver building control solutions that improve comfort, performance, and reliability.

Role Overview

As an HVAC Controls Systems Engineer, you will design, configure, and support complete building control systems, including related low-voltage subsystems, to meet project intent and contract requirements. You will partner with internal teams, customers, consultants, and subcontractors to deliver high-quality solutions, strong documentation, and successful commissioning results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and configure technically complex HVAC building control systems in line with contract documents and project requirements.

  • Create flow diagrams, sequences of operation, bill of material, network layouts, and electrical schematics as needed.

  • Develop and test software programs required to operate the system as intended.

  • Prepare drawings, equipment schedules, and submittals to support installation and project execution.

  • Select, order, and track materials for assigned projects.

  • Support factory-mounting processes, controller loading, and commissioning activities.

  • Validate system performance, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate resolution with subcontractors and other trades.

  • Provide field change information for as-built drawings and software updates.

  • Keep project teams and customers informed of progress, issues, and key decisions.

  • Assist with site-specific training for owners and operators on the total building control system.

  • Support value engineering efforts that improve cost effectiveness while protecting customer satisfaction.

  • Maintain a strong focus on safety for employees, subcontractors, and the job site.

How You Will Do It
  • Own the outcome by delivering safe, accurate, and timely engineering support that helps field teams meet project goals.

  • Stay close to the work by aligning design decisions with contract documents, site conditions, and customer intent, and by removing obstacles quickly when they arise.

  • Improve every day through disciplined troubleshooting, candid communication, and practical problem-solving during programming, testing, and startup.

  • Win as one team by collaborating closely with project managers, field technicians, subcontractors, consultants, and owners.

  • Use Niagara Framework-based tools and building automation protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LON to support system integration and operation.

  • Apply clear documentation practices so submittals, as-builts, and software updates reflect the latest project information.

  • Balance technical quality, schedule awareness, and customer communication throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Follow Johnson Controls safety expectations and bring integrity to every interaction and handoff.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of 3 years of experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the construction or HVAC industry.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and other building subsystems.

  • Demonstrated experience integrating low-voltage building subsystems using industry protocols such as LON and BACnet.

  • Experience with Niagara Framework-based systems, including JACE controllers and Tridium Server environments.

  • Experience with Niagara Workbench for programming, graphics development, and diagnostics.

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to a non-technical audience.

  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills, particularly with computer-related drafting tools.

  • Ability to support commissioning, troubleshooting, and field coordination in a project-based environment.

Nice to Have
  • Level 1 and Level 2 certification.

Why Join Us

What we offer:

  • Competitive base salary and a comprehensive bonus program.

  • Three weeks paid vacation in a calendar year, plus holidays, sick time, and three PTO days in a calendar year.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including 401K, medical, dental, and vision care available day one.

  • Extensive product and on-the-job/cross-training opportunities.

  • Encouraging and collaborative team environment.

  • Dedication to safety through our Zero Harm policy.

  • Scheduling and management support.

  • JCI employee discount programs through The Loop by Perk Spot.
