What is a contract quality engineer?

A Contract Quality Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring that products and processes meet quality standards on a temporary or project-based basis. They work with manufacturers, suppliers, and teams to implement quality control procedures, conduct audits, and address compliance issues. These engineers may also analyze defects, improve processes, and ensure regulatory requirements are met. Their role is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Since it is a contract position, the duration and scope of responsibilities may vary depending on the project or employer needs.

What does a contract quality engineer do?

As a Contract Quality Engineer, your daily responsibilities often include conducting inspections, analyzing quality data, coordinating corrective actions, and ensuring compliance with customer and regulatory standards. You'll frequently interface with production teams, suppliers, and project managers to troubleshoot quality issues and implement process improvements. One of the main challenges is adapting quickly to different company systems and meeting tight project deadlines, since contract roles often require immediate impact with minimal onboarding. To thrive as a Contract Quality Engineer, you need a strong background in quality assurance processes, root cause analysis, and engineering principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry standards such as ISO 9001, Six Sigma methodologies, and proficiency in tools like statistical analysis software (e.g., Minitab) are highly valuable. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills enable effective collaboration and fast integration into project teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring product and process quality in contract-based, dynamic environments where quick results and compliance are essential.

Job description

The Quality Engineer is responsible for owning the fundamentals of the Quality Management System across our S6 and S12 product lines. Translates technical input from manufacturing, suppliers, and customers into root-caused corrective action, contract-compliant documentation, and closed-loop DFM feedback to design engineering. Beyond day-to-day quality engineering, this role builds and strengthens the QMS processes, tooling, and supplier quality practices that keep both product lines audit-ready as they scale from prototype to production.
Required Skill
  • Solid understanding of quality management systems (ISO 9001, AS9100) and root cause problem-solving processes
  • Ability to apply engineering/technical knowledge to quality decisions
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer/contract specifications
  • Working knowledge of AS9102 and familiarity with CMM inspection data
  • Some experience with supplier quality, including audits and corrective action, and comfort splitting that work with others as the team grows
  • Ability to work cross-functionally between engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and customers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • U.S. Person status required
  • B.S. degree or higher in an engineering discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience

Preferred Skills
  • Experience in start-up environments
  • Experience with unmanned/autonomous systems, subsea, or robotics
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification
  • Experience standing up a QMS at an early-stage or scaling company
  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC)

Vatn Systems is an equal opportunity employer, and we welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply. We look forward to reviewing your application and potentially having you join our team in shaping the future of autonomous underwater vehicles.
