How much do contract sewing jobs pay per hour?
What is the difference between Contract Sewing vs Pattern Maker?
| Aspect | Contract Sewing | Pattern Maker |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically no formal certification required, but experience in sewing and industry knowledge preferred | Often requires technical training or certification in pattern making or fashion design |
| Work Environment | Factories, sewing workshops, or production facilities | Design studios, pattern rooms, or manufacturing settings |
| Industry Usage | Used by apparel manufacturers, contractors, and production companies | Used by fashion designers, apparel companies, and pattern companies |
| Job Focus | Assembling garments based on specifications | Creating and developing patterns for garments |
Contract Sewing involves assembling garments in a production setting, focusing on sewing and finishing. Pattern Makers design and develop patterns that guide garment construction. While Contract Sewing emphasizes manufacturing, Pattern Making centers on design and development. Both roles are essential in apparel production but differ in skills, responsibilities, and work environment.

What Are Contract Sewing Jobs?
Contract sewing jobs focus on the production of clothing and other items using a sewing machine. Your duties and responsibilities as a contractor in this field vary depending on the details of each project on which you work. A client can ask you to sew materials for retail, custom designs, or personal use. However, as a contractor, you are not often responsible for mass production jobs. Your client should supply details for the project, such as the type of fabric, measurements, and required design elements. As a seamstress, you create a price for the project and ensure that you can complete the work by the deadline.

- Follow work orders, sewing patterns, technical drawings, and production instructions
- Produce clean, accurate, and consistent stitching while maintaining high production standards
- Inspect completed products to ensure they meet quality, durability, and dimensional specifications
- Perform routine machine maintenance including threading, bobbin changes, needle replacement, and basic troubleshooting
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe production workspace

- Ability to sew multiple layers of heavy-duty materials with precision
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship
- Ability to read and follow production instructions and sewing patterns
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (Government contract requirement)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience manufacturing tactical gear, military equipment, backpacks, plate carriers, pouches, or load-bearing systems
- Experience working with Cordura, ballistic nylon, webbing, hook & loop, and other technical textiles
- Experience operating automated cutting equipment, laser cutters, hot knives, or bar tack machines
- Familiarity with Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation

- Opportunities to expand your skills into advanced manufacturing, product development, and production operations
- Clean, organized, and professional manufacturing facility
