Job Description:

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is looking for a Static Stress Engineer to join our Engineering department based in Wichita, Kansas.

Job Summary:

As a Static Stress Engineer you will support the fleet in-service repair of aircraft structures and is responsible for the justification of repair solutions from a Static Stress point of view, on Time, to Cost and to Quality. Duties include performing static analysis for both metallic and non-metallic parts while working in close collaboration with design and fatigue colleagues to provide repair solutions. Methods include the use of both classical hand calculations and computer techniques to develop efficient repair solutions to satisfy airworthiness requirements and customers (Airlines/MROs).

Your working environment:

Located on the Wichita State University (WSU) innovation campus is Airbus' first dedicated engineering facility outside of Europe.

Your challenges:
  • Create high quality integrated and certified engineering repair solutions for the airlines and internal customers within given time scales.

  • Perform stress/strength analyses to assess that structural integrity requirements have been met using standard hand and computer methods. Assignments include structural sizing/documentation and subsequent certification documents for in-service fleet support.

  • Perform durability and damage tolerance analyses to verify that structural integrity requirements have been met. Assignments may include detail part sizing, layout maturation, trade study analysis, weight reduction efforts, certification activity, or in-service support.

  • Liaise with Design, Fatigue and other appropriate Airbus departments to come up with optimum design solutions for the airline customer.

  • Liaise with Principal and Senior Static Engineers in order to ensure that methods, assumptions, data and procedures reflect on-going developments.

  • Ensure, with the relevant technical signature delegation, that the final repair solution brings the aircraft back into an airworthy condition.

  • Identify and support local improvement initiatives to increase team efficiency through process, methods and tools improvements.

  • Ensure all tasks and activities required for Repair Engineering are correctly planned, monitored and executed to achieve customer time scales.

  • Provide responses for routine repair queries by giving guidance as required within Airbus Operations and Customer Services in a clear and concise manner.

  • Together with other Repair Design and Fatigue Engineers, be a member of an integrated engineering team, ensuring its strategy, policy and direction is maintained.

Your boarding pass:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Engineering (Aero, Civil, Mechanical) with a strong curriculum emphasis on structural design and analysis and mechanics of materials is required.

  • 5+ years total analysis experience in airframe design/repair programs.

  • Position requires in-depth knowledge of classical and numerical (Finite Element) stress analysis methods.

  • Capable of working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment both independently and collectively.

  • Up to ~5 % Domestic and very limited possible international travel, subject to additional based on customer / project requirements

  • Authorized to Work in the US

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite or remote: Onsite a minimum of 90% of the time at the Wichita Engineering office.

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings; daily.

  • Hearing: able to hear in order to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear safety warnings or alarms; daily.

  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications; daily

  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment; daily.

  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs; once a month.

  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs; once a month.

  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools; once a month.

  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer; daily.

  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.

  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices; daily.

  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice; 10% of the time.

  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces; daily.

  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site
