Contract Programmer Side information

What is a contract programmer side?

Contract programmer side jobs are freelance or part-time programming roles that individuals take on in addition to their primary employment. These jobs involve working on a contract basis, often for short-term projects or specific tasks, and offer flexibility in hours and workload. Many programmers pursue such side gigs to earn extra income, gain experience with new technologies, or expand their professional network. Typical responsibilities might include writing code, debugging software, or developing applications for clients. These roles can be remote, on-site, or a mix of both depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract programmer side?

To thrive as a Contract Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C#), software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with code repositories (like Git), project management tools, and sometimes certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate or AWS Certified Developer are valuable. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and clear communication skills help you stand out in delivering client-driven solutions. These competencies enable contract programmers to efficiently deliver high-quality software on time while meeting client expectations and adapting to varied project requirements.

What are some common challenges contract programmers face when working on the client side, and how can they overcome them?

Contract programmers working on the client side often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new codebases, aligning with the client's project management tools, and maintaining clear communication with remote teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to invest time in understanding the existing architecture early on, actively participate in team meetings, and frequently check in with project stakeholders to clarify requirements. Building strong documentation habits and leveraging collaboration tools can also ease integration and ensure project milestones are met efficiently.

Forward Deployed Software Engineer

PVM, Inc.

Huntsville, AL โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Job description

Forward Deployed Software Engineer

On-Site: Huntsville, Alabama

Reports to: Echo

Direct reports: None. Delta's provide performance feedback on other engineers and participate in company peer mentorship program.

Travel: 0-10%

At PVM, we serve those who serve, as a Palantir ally for mission impact. We are a veteran-founded, Palantir Vanguard partner — and the only small business providing services in that tier. In Huntsville, that means helping our government partners tackle real problems in National Security, Readiness, and Space — not building shelfware.

Help Us Build PVM's Huntsville Hub

This role is an opportunity to take a front seat in PVM's Huntsville hub – you'll have front-row proximity to mission, direct mentorship from Palantir experts, and a clear growth path as you get in early while we are building the hub from the ground up. You'll be working in small, senior teams with real autonomy and be able to truly own your work—without the bureaucracy you may find at large companies.

About the Role

You are the technical leader for your hub's implementations. You own architecture, secure code delivery, team mentorship, and forward-looking research to ensure every solution is innovative, scalable, and mission-ready. At PVM, a Delta doesn't just oversee code. You architect solutions, lead delivery on projects, mentor builders, and stay ahead of trends, combining deep technical expertise with leadership, to multiply mission impact.

Other Cool Names You Might Wear

Implementation Lead

Technical Lead

Solution Architect

Principle Engineer

What "Own It" Looks Like Here

  • Embed with the customer, participate in user research and quickly prototype solutions.
  • Architect and execute innovative software solutions tailored to customer missions.
  • Build & lead delivery of secure, scalable code from concept to production.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to grow team capabilities.
  • Conduct technical solution research and track product trends.
  • Collaborate closely with your Echo to translate product vision into technical reality.
  • Ensure code quality, security, and maintainability through reviews and best practices.
  • Surge on the toughest technical challenges to keep momentum high focused on outcomes, not just features.
  • Demonstrate progress and lead customer facing desk side feedback sessions.

You'll Thrive Here If

  • Former Palantir Delta / FDSE or equivalent deep Palantir platform expertise
  • 10+ YOE in computer science, software engineering, mission knowledge, or related vocation
  • Feel rooted in your community — you're close to the people, challenges, and missions shaping life in Huntsville.
  • Proven track record leading implementations in government or secure environments.
  • You can design a system, mentor a team, and dive into code in the same day.
  • Are Mission & Outcome Obsessed – you care more about results than slideware.
  • Own It – you see a problem, you fix it; no one needs to hand you a ticket.
  • Believe We Are Better Together – small, senior teams are greater than lone heroes.
  • Keep It Real – straight talk, no politics, no drama.
  • Align with our first core value: Its simple: don't be a jerk. We've got too much good to do.
  • Active clearance (or immediate eligibility).
  • Palantir Foundry and Apollo experience is highly desired.
  • Military/Special Operation/Law Enforcement favored but not required.

What You'll Get In Return

  • A front-row seat at our Huntsville Hub not a back-row seat on a bloated contract.
  • Direct mentorship from Palantir experts and a clear path to broader leadership roles.
  • The agility of a small business with the credibility of a top-tier Palantir Vanguard partner.
  • A team that cares deeply about the mission and each other.

About PVM & Benefits

At PVM, we mean it when we say we value diversity. As a PVM team member, you will work with people from all different backgrounds that are passionate about the problems we solve for our customers and are focused on delivering value for our clients. Our culture encourages problem solving, leadership, and innovation, and creates an environment that will support your professional and personal growth. Here are a few highlights of the advantages of being a part of the PVM community:

  • Opportunities for growth and advancement
  • Tuition/Training reimbursement
  • Peer bonus program
  • Remote and on-site positions available
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Flexible work schedule

PVM delivers digital services that help government agencies unlock the power of their data for good and maximize the value of their technology investments. We design, develop, and deploy solutions to solve mission-critical problems. PVM is a black- and service-disabled veteran-owned small business and was founded by a retired Naval officer out of frustration with the status quo with one goal in mind: to help his fellow Shipmates solve the problems they were facing every day. Today, we continue to be driven by that same goal and are focused on taking on our clients' missions as our own to make a difference in the communities we serve. PVM believes in equal opportunity employment. We won't discriminate against any employee or applicant based on race, gender, nationality, age, religion, disability, military status, or sexual orientation. As a company and as individuals, we're committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for our team, our family members, and our clients.
