What is a contract process engineer?

Contract Process Engineers are professionals who are hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to design, optimize, and troubleshoot industrial processes within a company. They often work in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, or manufacturing, providing technical expertise to improve production efficiency, safety, and quality. Their responsibilities may include process design, equipment specification, project management, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Because they work on a contract basis, their assignments may vary in length and scope depending on the needs of the employer.

What types of projects or industries do contract process engineers typically work on, and how does this influence their daily responsibilities?

Contract Process Engineers often work on short- to medium-term assignments across industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, oil and gas, and manufacturing. The nature of their projects can range from process optimization and troubleshooting to equipment commissioning and plant upgrades. Depending on the industry and project scope, daily responsibilities may include conducting process simulations, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, preparing technical documentation, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This variety allows for broad experience, but also requires adaptability and strong communication skills to integrate quickly with new teams and workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, experience with process optimization, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen HYSYS or CHEMCAD), project management tools, and safety compliance standards is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and adaptability are valuable soft skills for managing changing project requirements and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and cost-effective process improvements that meet contractual obligations and client expectations.

Job description

Description:

Sharetec is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, API & Integration to join our team!

At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of people's lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology that enhances operations across accounting, lending, member services, and online banking, and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.

As a Senior Software Engineer on our API & Integration team, you'll design and build greenfield API services that sit at the center of Sharetec's modernization strategy. Your work will define the integration layer and transitional architecture that ties together our existing credit union platform and the next generation of services — normalizing data against our established schema so that disparate systems can speak a common language. You'll work hands-on in Go, designing clean REST or GraphQL interfaces, and partner closely with engineers, product managers, and QA to deliver reliable, secure, and well-documented integrations. This is an exceptional opportunity for an engineer who loves designing APIs from first principles, thinks in systems and data models, and wants to help shape the foundation of a platform serving credit unions across the country.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, remote position open to candidates residing in any U.S. state, with the exception of California. The starting salary for this position is $110,000 - $140,000 based on experience, plus annual bonus opportunity. This position is open to candidates authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Who Will Love This Job

  • Someone who finds more satisfaction in making something better than building something new — and understands why that's harder
  • Someone who believes that technology serving people's financial lives is worth doing with real care and precision
  • Someone who is energized by a company in motion — where the roadmap is growing and your contributions shape the direction
  • Someone who is energized by greenfield API design and wants to shape an integration layer from the ground up
  • Someone who thinks in data models and enjoys the puzzle of normalizing messy, real-world schemas into clean, durable interfaces
  • Someone who thrives as the connective tissue between systems — building the hub that ties several platforms together
  • Someone who values pragmatism, building transitional architecture that delivers value today while building for the future
  • Someone who enjoys mentoring, raising the bar on API standards, and sharing what they know

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

API Design & Architecture

  • Design and build greenfield REST or GraphQL APIs in Go that are secure, performant, versioned, and well-documented.
  • Establish and own the API as the integration layer and transitional architecture for Sharetec's Core modernization initiative.
  • Design and build complex scalable workloads supporting modern API standards and deployments (Docker, OAuth2/2.1, JWT, OpenAPI/Swagger, Terraform, etc.).
  • Define API design standards, contracts, and shared libraries that other teams can reuse.
  • Evaluate and recommend tooling and frameworks that improve developer productivity and integration reliability.

Integration & Data Normalization

  • Design the data-normalization layer that maps between new services and the existing data schema.
  • Build the central integration hub that ties several distinct systems together through a common normalization model.
  • Partner with core processing engineers to ensure integration contracts remain aligned with the platform of record as it evolves.
  • Ensure data integrity, observability, and graceful failure handling across all integration endpoints.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Mentor and coach mid-level and junior engineers on API and integration design.
  • Lead design discussions and code reviews; promote a culture of clear communication and shared ownership.
  • Translate business and product needs into technical solutions alongside product managers and QA.
  • Contribute to documentation, internal tooling, and process improvements that make the whole team faster and better.

Qualified Candidates Should Have

Required

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, including senior or technical-leadership responsibility on complex projects.
  • Deep, hands-on proficiency in Go for building backend and API services.
  • Extensive experience designing REST or GraphQL APIs from the ground up (not solely consuming third-party APIs).
  • Hands-on experience designing and building complex containerized workloads.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code solutions; Terraform or similar.
  • Strong database design and data-architecture skills, including data normalization and transitional/strangler-pattern architectures (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar).
  • Solid understanding of API security, versioning, performance optimization, and observability.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred

  • Experience in the financial services, fintech, or payments-technology industries.
  • Experience integrating payment rails, card networks, or other payments/fintech systems.
  • Hands-on experience with API tooling such as Postman (collections, contract testing, mocks).
  • Experience modernizing or building transitional architecture around a long-lived legacy system.
  • Demonstrated experience building integration hubs that tie several systems together through a central normalization layer.
  • Familiarity with service bus / messaging integrations (e.g., Azure Service Bus, MuleSoft, Kafka, MQ).
  • Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with SOC 2, PCI-DSS, or other compliance frameworks.
