What is a Contract PRN RN job?

A Contract PRN RN (as-needed Registered Nurse) is a nurse who works on a contractual basis, typically filling in shifts as required by healthcare facilities. Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN nurses have a flexible schedule and may work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. They are usually hired for short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages or seasonal demand. Contract PRN RNs may earn a higher hourly wage but typically do not receive benefits like full-time employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Prn Rn position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract PRN RN, you must possess current RN licensure, strong clinical assessment abilities, and a solid understanding of medical procedures, often complemented by recent acute care experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are commonly required. Excellent time management, adaptability to new environments, and clear communication enable success in this flexible, on-demand role. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while effectively integrating into various healthcare teams on short notice.

What are the typical scheduling and work expectations for a Contract PRN RN position?

Contract PRN RNs are usually hired to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary widely in length, frequency, and timing. Flexibility is essential, as assignments may be scheduled with short notice, including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on facility needs. Work environments can range from hospitals and clinics to long-term care settings, and you may work with different teams each shift. While this arrangement provides the opportunity to gain diverse experience and maintain a flexible work-life balance, it also requires adaptability and strong self-motivation.

Job description

Join Druid City Infusion — part of the Vital Care Infusion Services network!

We’re a rapidly growing home and alternate-site infusion therapy provider delivering compassionate, high-quality care for acute and chronic conditions right in patients’ homes or local clinics.

We support infusion therapy programs across multiple states, including Colorado, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee and beyond through the broader Vital Care network.

At Druid City Infusion, you’ll help bring advanced therapies like IVIG, neurology, rheumatology, pulmonary care, and more to patients in communities that need them — with strong clinical support and opportunities for professional growth.

Make an impact where it matters most — grow your career with a team delivering care across the nation!

Position Overview:

The PRN Registered Nurse at Vital Care serves as a clinical resource for referral sources and community home health agencies regarding infusion therapies provided by our pharmacy. In accordance with state licensure regulations, the nurse may also deliver direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of infusion therapy in collaboration with the registered pharmacist.

This role includes patient education, physician follow up, coordination with pharmacy staff for scheduling and delivery, and may involve advanced clinical procedures such as PICC line insertion (with appropriate qualifications). The position reports to the Nurse Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer IV medications and therapies, including subcutaneous injections, following aseptic protocols.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond appropriately.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Perform phlebotomy for lab testing.
  • Accurately document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in EHR systems.
  • Educate patients and families on infusion therapies, side effects, and self-care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety.
  • Provide support in emergency situations using sound clinical judgment.

Experience & Skills:

  • Experience in outpatient and home care settings across all age groups.
  • Strong understanding of infusion therapy protocols and clinical processes.
  • Background in nursing infusion, emergency medicine, vascular access, or home health.
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique and emergency response.
  • Proficiency with Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD).
  • Ability to perform thorough assessments, administer treatments safely, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills for patient education and team collaboration.
  • Critical thinking and adaptability in dynamic healthcare environments.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Active RN license.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (associate or bachelor's degree).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Clinical experience in a healthcare setting, preferably infusion therapy.
  • Availability to work flexible PRN hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Knowledge of state and federal healthcare regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with patients, families, and care teams.
