Contract Prn Rn information

What is a Contract PRN RN?

A Contract PRN RN (as-needed Registered Nurse) is a nurse who works on a contractual basis, typically filling in shifts as required by healthcare facilities. Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN nurses have a flexible schedule and may work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. They are usually hired for short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages or seasonal demand. Contract PRN RNs may earn a higher hourly wage but typically do not receive benefits like full-time employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract PRN RN position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract PRN RN, you must possess current RN licensure, strong clinical assessment abilities, and a solid understanding of medical procedures, often complemented by recent acute care experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are commonly required. Excellent time management, adaptability to new environments, and clear communication enable success in this flexible, on-demand role. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while effectively integrating into various healthcare teams on short notice.

What are the typical scheduling and work expectations for a Contract PRN RN position?

Contract PRN RNs are usually hired to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary widely in length, frequency, and timing. Flexibility is essential, as assignments may be scheduled with short notice, including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on facility needs. Work environments can range from hospitals and clinics to long-term care settings, and you may work with different teams each shift. While this arrangement provides the opportunity to gain diverse experience and maintain a flexible work-life balance, it also requires adaptability and strong self-motivation.

Show Up When It Matters Most
In hospice care, there are moments when a patient or family needs more than their regular care team can provide in that instant. That's where you come in. As an ECT (Extended Care Team) Nurse at Transitions Hospice, you're the reinforcement - the skilled, composed clinical presence that steps in to ensure no patient need goes unmet.
This isn't a role for someone who needs a rigid routine. It's a role for an adaptable, experienced RN who thrives in varied environments, thinks on their feet, and finds deep satisfaction in knowing that when you showed up, it made all the difference.
What You'll Do
As a Transitions Hospice ECT Nurse, you'll work as a vital support member of the interdisciplinary care team - stepping in across cases to assess, treat, and communicate patient needs with speed and clinical precision. Your responsibilities include:
  • Delivering professional nursing care across the full nursing process within your scope of practice
  • Conducting thorough patient and family assessments and contributing to individualized care plans
  • Completing all visit types as needed to meet patient and family needs
  • Administering medications and treatments per physician orders
  • Identifying nursing diagnoses from health assessment data and responding accordingly
  • Recording accurate, timely clinical notes including pain and symptom management outcomes
  • Communicating changes in patient condition to physicians and obtaining orders as required
  • Coordinating with community health partners to support seamless care transitions
  • Ensuring equipment and necessary services are arranged and available for patients
  • Maintaining and growing your clinical skills through continuing education and in-service participation

Benefits We Offer
  • Competitive pay
  • Company provided equipment
  • Paid Time Off

Why Choose Transitions Hospice?
At Transitions, the ECT Nurse isn't a backup plan - you're a cornerstone of how we deliver on our promise to patients and families. You'll work alongside a team that respects your expertise, values your flexibility, and shares your commitment to care that goes above and beyond. Every visit you make is a patient who didn't have to wait, a family that felt supported, and a care team that could count on you.
Ready to be the nurse everyone counts on? Apply today.
