Position Summary
Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a skilled Field Technician 3 to support the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of industrial automation and control systems. The successful candidate will provide technical support for equipment, integrated systems, subsystems, and software within a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
This role requires hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, industrial machinery, electrical controls, and automation systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong troubleshooting abilities, technical expertise, and excellent communication skills to support operations and customer needs.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify industrial equipment, automation systems, and control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime and restore operational performance.
  • Provide technical support for control automation systems and related equipment.
  • Support the development, implementation, and enhancement of new automation and control systems.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems.
  • Analyze equipment performance and recommend corrective actions and system improvements.
  • Install, upgrade, and remove hardware and software components while ensuring compliance with engineering change requirements.
  • Read, interpret, create, and modify electrical and control schematics.
  • Review and update AutoCAD drawings and technical documentation.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on industrial machinery and automation equipment.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, production, and operations teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain effective customer and stakeholder communication regarding system status and support activities.
  • Provide onsite technical training and support to operations and maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety, quality, and operational procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate Degree or other 2-year Technical Degree in Electrical Technology, Electronics, Automation, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting industrial automation, controls, or maintenance systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting industrial machinery and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, instrumentation, and controls schematics.
  • Experience working in heavy industrial, manufacturing, production, shipbuilding, or related environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
