What is a contract physical therapy reviewer?

Contract Physical Therapy Reviewers are licensed physical therapists who work on a contractual basis to review patient records, treatment plans, and therapy documentation to ensure medical necessity, regulatory compliance, and quality standards. They often work remotely for insurance companies, healthcare organizations, or third-party administrators. Their primary role is to evaluate whether the physical therapy services provided are appropriate and justified, based on clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices. This helps organizations maintain high-quality care and manage healthcare costs while ensuring patients receive the right treatments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a contract physical therapy reviewer?

To thrive as a Contract Physical Therapy Reviewer, you need a valid physical therapy license, strong clinical expertise, and experience in chart review or utilization management. Familiarity with medical review platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and knowledge of insurance guidelines or coding systems (such as ICD-10 or CPT) are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective written communication are essential soft skills for evaluating documentation and conveying findings. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely review decisions that support quality patient care and organizational standards.

What are common challenges faced by contract physical therapy reviewers, and how can they be managed?

Contract Physical Therapy Reviewers often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of case reviews within tight deadlines, staying updated on changing clinical guidelines, and maintaining objectivity when assessing diverse treatment plans. To address these challenges, reviewers benefit from strong organizational skills, regular professional development, and effective communication with clinical teams. Leveraging standardized review tools and collaborating with colleagues can also help maintain consistency and accuracy in evaluations.

Position: Staff Physical Therapist
Setting: Outpatient private practice
Specialty: Pelvic Health
Location: Huntsville - 4240 Balmoral Drive SW #100 Huntsville, Alabama 35801 United States
Company Story
Where purpose meets growth.
For over 20 years, Johnson & Hayes Physical Therapists has delivered patient-first care in a supportive, therapist-owned environment. Founded in 2003, we've grown to serve communities across Alabama and Tennessee with multiple locations and expanding partnerships.
As we grow, we're adding talented clinicians who value teamwork, clinical excellence, and professional development.
We work together.
You'll join a strong, collaborative team of physical therapists who support one another and celebrate shared success. Whether you're a seasoned therapist or just starting your career, we invest in your development and help you grow where your interests take you.
Our patients are what drives us.
We treat patients like we would our own families with compassion, expertise, and consistency. We prioritize continuity of care by ensuring patients work with the same therapist or therapy team throughout their plan of care.
Job Overview & Work Site
Work-life balance? We live it.
We prioritize your time. Our advanced documentation technology allows you to focus more on patient care and less on paperwork-many of our clinicians complete their notes in half the time compared to traditional outpatient clinics.
The patients you'll help.
This position focuses on treating a diverse pelvic health caseload. You'll work with patients experiencing a wide range of pelvic health dysfunctions, including but not limited to pelvic pain, incontinence, pregnancy/postpartum conditions, postoperative rehab, and pelvic floor muscle disorders. You'll see a great variety of patient presentations, offering clinical challenge and rewarding outcomes.
How we do it.
We keep caseloads appropriate and ensure you have the time and tools to deliver exceptional care. We offer robust onboarding, structured mentorship, and access to specialty certifications and professional development tailored to your goals.
Do what you want to do.
Got a passion for a specific area of care? Let us help you build it. We support special interest development across a range of therapy services.
Go where you want to go.
As we continue to expand, so do your opportunities. We support growth into clinical instruction, leadership, and even the launch of new clinics-wherever you see your career heading, we're here to help you get there.
Our clinic network continues to grow throughout Alabama and Tennessee. You'll find opportunities in both established and emerging markets-with flexibility to match your preferences.
