The role requires hands-on expertise with terabyte-scale MySQL databases, low-or zero-downtime upgrade strategies, AWS-hosted production systems, and strong operational ownership. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with MySQL upgrades, AWS RDS and Aurora, database migration methods, high availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning, and production support. Exposure to MongoDB, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, and regulated financial-services platforms is highly preferred.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute major and minor MySQL upgrades, including MySQL 5.7 to 8.x migrations, for large production databases.
  • Design upgrade and migration strategies for databases ranging from hundreds of gigabytes to multiple terabytes.
  • Lead in-place upgrades, logical and physical migrations, replication-based migrations, Blue/Green deployments, and AWS DMS-based migrations.
  • Perform upgrade readiness assessments covering compatibility, deprecated features, SQL modes, drivers, plugins, stored procedures, triggers, events, and application dependencies.
  • Create upgrade runbooks, rollback plans, validation checklists, risk assessments, implementation plans, and stakeholder communication plans.
  • Conduct pre-and post-upgrade validation, including row counts, checksums, reconciliation queries, performance benchmarking, and application testing.
  • Coordinate production upgrade and migration activities with application, infrastructure, cloud, security, DevOps, QA, compliance, and business teams.
  • Troubleshoot upgrade failures, replication lag, data inconsistencies, performance issues, locking, deadlocks, and application connectivity problems.
  • Manage cutover planning, release windows, freeze periods, rollback decisions, post-migration monitoring, and production hyper-care.
AWS and Database Platform Administration
  • Administer and support MySQL databases on AWS, including Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon Aurora MySQL, Aurora PostgreSQL, EC2-hosted databases, and AWS Database Migration Service.
  • Manage Multi-AZ deployments, read replicas, snapshots, automated backups, point-in-time recovery, parameter groups, option groups, cluster upgrades, and Aurora Blue/Green deployments.
  • Monitor performance, replication health, capacity, storage growth, availability, security controls, audit logging, encryption, access policies, credential rotation, and AWS database costs.
  • Support MongoDB environments, including replica sets, sharding, backups, restores, indexing, performance, upgrades, migrations, monitoring, and security practices.
  • Administer Aurora PostgreSQL clusters and support PostgreSQL upgrades, failover, backups, monitoring, performance analysis, replication, autovacuum, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization.
Performance, Availability, and Operations
  • Monitor and tune MySQL performance in high-volume transaction environments using slow query analysis, execution plans, indexing, partitioning, configuration tuning, and workload analysis.
  • Manage high availability, disaster recovery, replication, failover, recovery testing, operational health checks, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning.
  • Support asynchronous, semi-synchronous, GTID-based, and read-replica architectures.
  • Handle critical incidents, root-cause analysis, permanent corrective actions, and production escalations.
  • Support databases for digital lending, loan origination, loan servicing, payments, collections, credit decisioning, customer communications, and other financial-services workloads.
  • Ensure database changes follow change management, security, compliance, audit, and release management processes.
Skills Required
  • Strong hands-on MySQL database administration experience, including MySQL internals, storage engines, transactions, replication, locking, indexing, query optimization, backup, restore, recovery, failover, and disaster recovery.
  • Proven experience upgrading large production MySQL databases, including terabyte-scale environments and MySQL 5.7 to 8.x upgrades.
  • Strong experience with Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Aurora Blue/Green deployments, AWS DMS, CloudWatch, Performance Insights, AWS Backup, KMS, S3, and Secrets Manager.
  • Working experience with MongoDB and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to write advanced SQL for monitoring, validation, troubleshooting, reconciliation, and performance analysis.
  • Experience with Linux administration, shell scripting, database monitoring tools, security controls, encryption, access management, audit logging, and compliance practices.
  • Experience with ITIL, incident, problem, change, and release management processes.
Good to Have
  • Experience with Percona Toolkit, MySQL Shell, MySQL Utilities, Orchestrator, ProxySQL, Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, New Relic, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, CI/CD pipelines, database deployment automation, Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of PCI-DSS, SOC 2, ISO 27001, data masking, tokenization, database activity monitoring, cross-region disaster recovery, and multi-region database architectures.
