What is contract mining?

Contract mining is a business model where a mining company hires an external contractor to carry out mining operations instead of performing the work with its own staff and equipment. This can include tasks such as drilling, blasting, hauling, and ore processing. Contract mining allows companies to access specialized expertise, reduce capital expenditure, and improve operational efficiency. It is commonly used in both surface and underground mining projects to help optimize costs and manage risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract miner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Miner, you need practical experience in mining operations, a sound understanding of safety regulations, and typically a relevant vocational qualification or trade certification. Familiarity with mining equipment, machinery, and industry-specific software such as mine planning systems is important. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure safe and efficient project execution. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining operational safety, meeting production targets, and collaborating effectively within variable mining environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in contract mining, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in contract mining often face challenges such as tight project deadlines, fluctuating commodity prices, and adapting to diverse client requirements across different sites. Managing safety and environmental compliance in varying conditions is also a key concern. These challenges are typically addressed through robust project planning, maintaining open communication with clients, investing in staff training, and implementing rigorous safety protocols. Many contract mining teams also use advanced technology and data analytics to optimize operations and minimize downtime.

Description

As a Superintendent with Ledcorโ€™s Mining team, you will provide frontline leadership for largeโ€‘scale mining and earthworks operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and highโ€‘quality execution across your assigned shift or area.

Youโ€™ll oversee mining crews and equipment fleets, coordinate daily production plans, monitor output, and ensure all activities align with mine plans, operating procedures, schedules, and cost objectives.

In this role, youโ€™ll be the onโ€‘site operational leadโ€”driving production strategies, optimizing work methods, troubleshooting issues in the field, and supporting a productive, engaged workforce.

Youโ€™ll also foster strong working relationships with clients, mine engineers, maintenance teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and fellow site staff to maintain a collaborative, solutionsโ€‘focused work environment.

We are committed to the longโ€‘term success and wellโ€‘being of our employees.

Come and join our Mining team today!

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Supervise all aspects of mining and earthworks operations, ensuring compliance with mine plans, shift instructions, safety standards, and company policies
  • Maintain highโ€‘quality operational performance while optimizing equipment utilization, labor efficiency, and material resources
  • Enforce site safety protocols that meet or exceed corporate, client, and regulatory mining requirements
  • Monitor, analyze, and update production schedules to meet daily, weekly, and longโ€‘range mine targets
  • Review supplier and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and report discrepancies
  • Hire, develop, and manage hourly mineโ€‘site employees in coordination with the Project Manager
  • Prepare and process production changes, field adjustments, or scope modifications with client representatives as needed
  • Lead planning meetings with Maintenance and Operations teams to ensure equipment readiness, fleet availability, and operational continuity
Qualifications:
  • 5โ€“10 years of supervisory experience in mining operations or largeโ€‘scale earthworks, preferably in an active mine environment
  • Proven ability to manage production schedules and adjust plans based on changing ground, weather, or equipment conditions
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills with the ability to develop practical, safe solutions to complex operational challenges
  • Highly effective communicator who can tailor messaging to operators, engineers, clients, and leadership teams
  • Collaborative leader who builds teamwork, accountability, and a positive safety culture
  • Willingness to travel and remain on site for the duration of mine projects
Working Conditions:
  • Siteโ€‘based role
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including sitting, standing, bending, climbing, lifting (up to 75 pounds), and working in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, extreme cold)
  • Ability to work a nonโ€‘traditional mining schedule, which may include nights, weekends, and rotational shifts
