What does a contract engineer do?

A contract engineer is responsible for managing engineering projects on a temporary basis, often focusing on specific tasks such as design, development, testing, or implementation. They typically work with project teams, adhere to deadlines, and may require knowledge of engineering tools and industry standards. Their role involves ensuring project goals are met efficiently within the contract terms.

Do contract engineers make more money?

Contract engineers often earn higher hourly rates than full-time employees due to the temporary nature of their work and the need for specialized skills. However, they may have less job security and benefits, and total annual income can vary based on project availability and experience. Factors such as industry, location, and certifications also influence earning potential for contract engineers.

What is contract engineering?

Contract engineering refers to the practice of hiring engineers on a temporary or project-specific basis, rather than as permanent employees. Contract engineers work for a set period or until a particular project is completed, often through staffing agencies or as independent contractors. This arrangement allows companies to access specialized skills and expertise as needed while providing engineers with flexibility and exposure to diverse projects. Contract engineers typically handle tasks such as design, development, testing, and project management across various industries.

How does a contract engineer typically balance multiple projects and ensure timely delivery of each contract?

Contract Engineers often manage several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational and time-management skills. They regularly coordinate with clients, suppliers, and internal teams to track progress, address issues early, and adjust timelines as needed. Utilizing project management tools and maintaining clear documentation helps them prioritize tasks and deliverables effectively. Open communication and proactive problem-solving are key strategies to meet contract milestones and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, contract management, and project coordination, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in contract administration. Familiarity with contract management software, project management tools (such as MS Project or Primavera), and industry regulations is essential. Strong negotiation, communication, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for effectively managing client and vendor relationships. These skills ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual and technical requirements.

Job description

Advanced Space | Full-time | Onsite

We're going to the Moon. Think you've got what it takes?

About the Role

At Advanced Space, we're enabling humanity's return to the Moon and building the technologies that will take us to Mars and beyond. We're looking for a Contracts Specialist to support the contracts and business operations behind some of the most ambitious space missions in the industry.

In this role, you'll support pre-award contracting activities, including proposal support, teaming agreements, NDAs, MOUs, and subcontract development. You'll work closely with Business Development, Finance, program managers, and technical teams to interpret solicitations, identify contractual risks, and ensure proposals and agreements are competitive, compliant, and aligned with mission objectives.

We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, eager to grow their government contracting expertise, and excited to contribute directly to missions that are advancing lunar exploration, national security, and commercial space capabilities.

This position is open to U.S. Citizens or lawful permanent residents only. Visa sponsorship is not available.

About Advanced Space

Advanced Space exists to enable the sustainable exploration, development, and settlement of space through innovative software, mission services, and technology solutions. As the owner and operator of NASA's CAPSTONE mission and the Prime Contractor for AFRL's Oracle mission, we're helping shape the future of cislunar exploration while supporting commercial, civil, and national security customers.

Our team combines deep technical expertise with an entrepreneurial mindset. We move quickly, collaborate across disciplines, and empower every engineer to make meaningful contributions. If you're passionate about solving challenging problems and seeing your work fly in space, you'll fit right in.

What You'll Actually Do

Support contracts and proposal execution.

Draft, review, and support negotiation of teaming agreements, NDAs, MOUs, and subcontracts that enable successful proposal submissions and protect Advanced Space's interests.

Translate requirements into compliant solutions.

Analyze government solicitations, including RFPs, BAAs, SBIRs, and OTAs, to identify contractual requirements, compliance obligations, and risk considerations. Develop compliance matrices and support proposal teams in creating competitive responses.

Manage contract risk and documentation.

Identify contractual, financial, schedule, and compliance risks while supporting risk mitigation strategies. Maintain accurate records of agreements, modifications, renewals, and key contract milestones.

Partner across the organization.

Collaborate with Business Development, Finance, technical teams, and program leadership to communicate contract requirements, support proposal activities, and ensure agreements align with company goals.

Improve contracts processes.

Help strengthen contracts operations by maintaining templates, checklists, workflows, and best practices. Contribute ideas that improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability as Advanced Space continues to grow.

Who Thrives Here

  • You have 1-2 years of experience in contracts, subcontracts, procurement, legal operations, business operations, or a related field.
  • You have a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Contract Management, Legal Studies, or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
  • You have foundational knowledge of government contracting concepts, including FAR, DFARS, and/or NASA requirements.
  • You have experience reviewing or drafting agreements such as NDAs, teaming agreements, or basic subcontracts.
  • You are comfortable interpreting solicitations and identifying compliance requirements, risks, and contractual obligations.
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills and can clearly explain contract topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You are organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced proposal environment.
  • You demonstrate strong judgment, integrity, and a commitment to ethical business practices.
  • You take ownership. When you see a challenge, you work with the team to solve it.

Bonus Points if You Have Experience With

  • Government contracting in aerospace, defense, or space industries
  • FAR, DFARS, NASA, or other federal contracting regulations
  • Subcontract management or partner agreements
  • Proposal development and capture processes
  • Cost/price proposal development and financial analysis
  • Intellectual property, data rights, or licensing considerations
  • Contract lifecycle management tools
  • Experience supporting government customers or prime contractors

Success is Measured By

  • Supporting compliant, competitive proposals and agreements that enable business growth.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely contract documentation and tracking.
  • Identifying and communicating contractual risks before they impact mission success.
  • Building strong partnerships with internal teams, customers, and external partners.
  • Improving contracts processes and helping scale the company's contracting capabilities.
  • Growing expertise in government and commercial space contracting.

Why Join Advanced Space

  • Support missions that are shaping the future of lunar and deep-space exploration.
  • Gain hands-on experience with government and commercial space contracts.
  • Collaborate with engineers, business leaders, and mission teams solving complex challenges.
  • Grow your career in a rapidly expanding aerospace company.
  • Join a team that's passionate about delivering innovation to orbit-and beyond.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $67,000-$92,000 (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
  • Signing bonus
  • Quarterly performance bonuses
  • Company-sponsored medical benefits and 401(k)
  • Flexible time off
