Contract drivers often face challenges such as unpredictable schedules, variable workloads, and maintaining their own vehicles. Many contract drivers also join professional networks or use mobile apps to streamline their work and find new opportunities, which can help reduce downtime and increase efficiency.

What is the difference between Contract Driver vs Delivery Driver?

AspectContract DriverDelivery Driver
CredentialsDriver's license, possibly commercial licenseDriver's license, sometimes specialized for certain vehicles
Work EnvironmentIndependent or contracted, often flexible hoursEmployed by a company, regular routes, scheduled hours
Employer & Industry UsageFreelance or contracted basis across various industriesCompany-employed, retail, food, or parcel delivery sectors
Search & Comparison IntentHigh overlap in credentials and work environmentSimilar roles but typically more structured employment

Contract drivers operate independently or on a contractual basis, offering flexibility and often working across multiple industries. Delivery drivers are usually employed by companies, following scheduled routes. Both roles require a valid driver's license, but contract drivers tend to have more autonomy, while delivery drivers have more structured hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a contract driver?

To thrive as a Contract Driver, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and familiarity with local routes and traffic laws. Experience with GPS navigation systems, delivery management apps, and, in some cases, a commercial driver's license (CDL) are typically required. Strong time management, reliability, and customer service skills make someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure timely, safe deliveries and positive client interactions, which are critical for building trust and repeat business.

What does a contract driver do?

As a contract driver, your primary responsibilities are to drive a vehicle to transport materials or items on a contract basis. Your duties vary depending on the details of each contract. You may drive a truck on a set delivery route to transport cargo, or you may have independent courier contracts and pick up and deliver materials for businesses, medical service providers, or private individuals. If you work as a courier, you may coordinate with a dispatch operator to receive information for each delivery. Contract drivers typically own the vehicle that they drive.

What is a contract driver?

Contract drivers are independent professionals who transport goods, packages, or passengers for companies or individuals based on a contractual agreement rather than as direct employees. They may work for delivery services, ride-share platforms, or logistics companies, often using their own vehicles. Contract drivers are responsible for managing their schedules, maintaining their vehicles, and handling taxes as independent contractors. This role offers flexibility but does not typically include benefits like health insurance or paid time off.

About Us
As a company, we promote a culture of honesty and integrity, and value the trust it allows us to build with customers and employees alike. Our focus on our people is what sets us apart and keeps our customers coming back to work with us!
If you are seeking to be a part of a family, this is the place for you!
Performance Team handles end-to-end warehousing and distribution logistics needs utilizing our strategic network of storage facilities. Our facilities are capable of receiving, storing, processing and dispatching cargo, so we can build flexibility and resilience into the supply chain process. Our integrated solutions allow us to be prepared for supply chain risks, so we can plan distribution to better achieve lead time and goals despite unexpected conditions. Our extensive experience, connections, and deep expertise across different sectors, industries, and transportation modes, means we can be counted on for process excellence that will save time and money.
About the Role
We're looking for a driven and resourceful Contract Driver Recruiter to help power our transportation workforce across the U.S. and Canada. In this role, you'll take full ownership of the recruiting lifecycle: sourcing, hiring, and onboarding top CDL and non-CDL company drivers-while also playing a key role in converting temporary drivers into long-term team members. If you thrive in a fast-paced, high-impact environment and enjoy connecting great talent with meaningful opportunities, this role is for you.
Role Expectations
  • Own the full recruitment lifecycle - from sourcing and screening to offer, onboarding, and early retention support
  • Recruit CDL & Non-CDL company drivers for tractor and straight truck operations across multiple markets
  • Drive conversion of temporary drivers into permanent company drivers across the U.S. and Canada
  • Proactively source candidates through job boards, social media, referrals, and targeted recruiting campaigns
  • Conduct interviews and assessments to evaluate experience, qualifications, and cultural fit
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and company hiring standards, including background checks, MVRs, and drug screenings
  • Maintain accurate records and administrative processing of all DQ files
  • Clearly communicate job expectations, compensation, schedules, and benefits to candidates
  • Partner closely with operations, HR, and workforce teams to meet hiring goals and staffing needs
  • Track and manage candidates using ATS systems (e.g., Tenstreet)
  • Support new hire engagement and retention efforts by maintaining communication through onboarding
  • Position is full-time on site

What You Bring
  • Experience recruiting CDL and non-CDL drivers in a high-volume environment
  • Strong understanding of transportation and trucking regulations (DOT/FMCSA)
  • Proven ability to manage end-to-end recruiting processes independently
  • Skilled at building pipelines in competitive markets
  • Experience with ATS platforms, ideally Tenstreet
  • Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills
  • A proactive, results-driven mindset with a focus on speed, quality, and retention

Why This Role Stands Out
  • End-to-end ownership - you're not just sourcing, you're driving the full hiring journey
  • Regional impact - directly support driver hiring across both the U.S. and Canada
  • Strategic influence - play a key role in improving driver retention through conversion and engagement
  • Fast-paced, high-visibility work that directly impacts operations success

Experience
  • 2+ years of experience in driver recruiting
  • Background in logistics, trucking, or delivery industries required
  • Experience managing compliance-heavy hiring processes
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred
  • Proven success in using creative sourcing techniques to produce diverse, quality, potential candidate pools.
  • Strong engagement and stakeholder partnership skills and the ability to understand and deliver to recruitment needs.

Company Benefits
  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • 401k + Company Match
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid Time Off
  • Flexible Work Schedules (when possible)
  • And more!

Pay Range
$35-$40 per hour*
*The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for the position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws.
You must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
