Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for success in contract-based work. These skills enable a Contract Developer to efficiently deliver quality results, meet client expectations, and thrive in dynamic, project-oriented environments.

What are some common challenges faced by contract developers and how can they be managed?

Contract Developers often work on multiple projects or with various clients, which can present challenges such as rapidly adapting to different codebases, meeting tight deadlines, and managing shifting priorities. Effective communication with stakeholders and clear agreement on project scope and deliverables can help minimize misunderstandings. Staying organized through productivity tools and maintaining continuous skills development also contribute to handling workload fluctuations. By proactively addressing these challenges, contract developers can deliver high-quality work and build strong professional relationships.

What does a contract developer do?

Job description

Our client, a leader in the nuclear field, is looking for an Industrial Engineer to join their team on a long term basis in Cambridge.

Job Description

This Industrial Engineer role focuses on supporting nuclear fabrication operations across facilities in the Cambridge and Brantford areas. You will play a key role in optimizing production processes, improving facility layouts, and enhancing overall system health and efficiency. The position combines manufacturing engineering expertise, data-driven analysis, and hands-on involvement with fabrication equipment and facility modifications to ensure high levels of productivity and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop accurate fabrication duration estimates by analyzing material takeoffs, design specifications, geometry, and equipment capabilities to support effective project planning and scheduling.
  • Identify and drive process improvements through capacity and utilization analysis, shop floor layout optimization, and the application of lean manufacturing principles.
  • Analyze production workflows by evaluating takt time, cycle time, and resource requirements to enhance efficiency, support jig design, and improve shop floor ergonomics.
  • Assess and define maintenance strategies and capital improvement needs for key fabrication equipment, including cranes, sub-arc welders, and plasma cutting systems.
  • Partner with equipment vendors and service providers to plan and execute preventative and corrective maintenance programs for critical fabrication and facility systems.
  • Perform root cause analysis on production performance metrics and implement corrective actions to improve operational reliability, throughput, and output quality.
  • Monitor the health of manufacturing systems and facilities, identifying opportunities to modify and upgrade equipment, utilities, and layouts to support evolving fabrication requirements.
  • Lead and support facility modifications, including moving equipment, adding new production lines, and implementing changes to gas lines, power lines, and other utilities.
  • Review and interpret production and efficiency data to fine-tune processes, reduce bottlenecks, and optimize production times across multiple fabrication projects.
  • Make informed, data-driven decisions on process and facility changes rather than deferring critical decisions to others, ensuring timely and effective implementation of improvements.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure that process improvements and facility changes are practical, safe, and aligned with production goals.
  • Support nuclear fabrication projects by applying specialized industrial and manufacturing engineering practices tailored to the unique requirements of this environment.

Essential Skills

  • Industrial engineering experience with a strong focus on manufacturing environments.
  • Manufacturing engineering degree or equivalent education in a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional engineering designation
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis to improve efficiencies, production times, and overall process performance.
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering, including time studies and workflow analysis.
  • Proficiency in lean manufacturing and Lean Six Sigma methodologies, including continuous improvement and process improvement techniques.
  • Experience working with cranes and other heavy fabrication equipment in a production environment.
  • Experience in facility modification, including planning and executing changes to equipment layouts, utilities, and production lines.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearances, including OPG or similar clearance and export controls compliance.
  • Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to make sound, data-driven decisions and take ownership of outcomes.

Work Environment

This role is based across manufacturing facilities in the Cambridge and Brantford areas. A designated home base will be assigned, and travel between facilities is expected, with mileage and gas support provided for travel. You will spend your time where production needs are greatest, focusing on areas with the most critical fabrication activity and improvement opportunities. The standard work schedule is approximately 40 hours per week, typically from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no regular shift work anticipated. Occasional adjustments to hours may occur during urgent production ramps or critical project phases. The environment is a hands-on fabrication and manufacturing setting, involving close interaction with cranes, welding systems, plasma cutting equipment, utilities, and facility infrastructure. You will work closely with operations and engineering teams in a culture that values continuous improvement, data-driven decision-making, and proactive maintenance to keep production performance high.
