POSITION SUMMARY

The Design Engineer will support the preconstruction design delivery of the project, under the direction of and in coordination with the Design Manager. Understand how Design-Build and P3 projects fit together: contracts, standards, construction, designers, and deliverables. During construction the Design Engineer will coordinate RFI's, minor work changes, field design changes and construction submittals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in the design process for various phases of the design life cycle, from proposal, detailed design, and construction to provide the best technical solutions to optimize the design, minimizing quantities and/or construction time, while all technical requirements are met.
  • Due diligence and review of designs provided by sub-consultants and clients, performing quality control reviews, and checking the design with independent analyses.
  • Assist in the monitoring of design progress against the design schedule. Review and approve tasks to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Be vigilant and anticipate technical risks and design strategies to protect the partnership team against those technical risks.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary environment, actively communicating with other departments and partners, particularly estimating and construction teams, to identify needs and evaluate alternative solutions, considering different interests and concerns.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and design projects and calculations, as needed.
  • Review and propose revisions to technical provisions and design requirements.
  • Develop or evaluate plans/criteria or special analyses required in support of the design effort.
  • Review drawings and designer submittals for accuracy.
  • Ensure construction plans, plans, and specifications conform to all applicable standards and requirements.
  • Participate in meetings with owners, developers, partners, and consultants.
  • Produce periodic reports, presentations, and synopsis, as required by management.

REPORTING

Design Coordinator & Deputy Design Coordinator

EDUCATION, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Civil Engineering is required.
  • 3-6 years of related work experience, with experience with Design-Build or Public-Private Partnership projects.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred, Engineer-in-Training required.
  • Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) is highly valuable.
  • Work ethic and integrity are important attributes to align with the values of BPC, and dedication to continual learning and seeking solutions is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good relationships and partnerships with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and construction partners required.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, and DOT standards required, with PennDOT regulations desirable.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with CAD required, Bentley MicroStation preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • P3 or Design Build experience in large projects (>$500M) on the contractor or designer side is highly valuable.
  • Knowledge of means and methods and construction techniques is highly valuable. On-site and field experience on civil projects preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods.
  • Requires driving occasionally for up to 2-5 hours.
  • Requires working in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Minimum physical exertion such as walking, lifting, standing for long periods, bending, or reaching may be required.
  • Requires visual ability to perform tasks: preparing and analyzing data, plans, drawings, outlines, viewing a computer, and extensive reading.
  • Requires the ability to physically operate standard office equipment i.e., laptop, phone, keyboard, mouse, etc.
