They must have proper certifications, experience, and knowledge of safety protocols to ensure efficient and secure operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract crane operator?

Contract Crane Operators require in-depth knowledge of crane operations, load calculations, and site safety, typically gained through experience and relevant certifications such as NCCCO or equivalent. Mastery of various crane types, rigging equipment, and safety management systems is often necessary. Reliability, strong communication, and situational awareness are essential soft skills for collaborating with site teams and maintaining safety. These competencies are vital to ensure efficient heavy lifting, minimize workplace accidents, and support seamless project execution.

What are some common challenges faced by contract crane operators on the job?

Contract Crane Operators often encounter challenges such as adapting to different job sites with varying terrain and weather conditions, as well as adjusting to diverse equipment and safety protocols. They must also carefully coordinate with ground crews, project managers, and other trades to ensure each lift goes smoothly and safely. Job description

\#JOBALERT | CONTRACT | CERTIFIED FORKLIFT OPERATOR | NEW CONSTRUCTION | CLARKSVILLE, TN

A national general contractor is adding a certified forklift operator to a large data center project in Clarksville, TN. The seat runs a rough terrain forklift and an off-road telehandler, runs a skid steer, and keeps the cranes on site serviced and clean (greasing, fluid checks, track and deck cleanup).

  • $40.00/hour
  • 5+ months, anticipate 50-60 hours per week
  • Requires forklift certification and OSHA 10
  • Start date: 08.17.2026 โ€” some flexibility past that date
  • Local to the Clarksville, TN area preferred

Overview

  • Move and stage material and equipment across an active data center construction site with a rough terrain forklift and an off-road telehandler
  • Run a skid steer for material handling and site cleanup as the work calls for it
  • Keep the cranes on site ready to work โ€” grease and fluid checks, debris off the tracks, cab glass clean, decks and walkways clear
  • Stage loads where the crane crews need them ahead of the pick, not after it
  • Complete daily equipment checks and pull a machine out of service when it needs to come out
  • Work safely around active lifts โ€” clear of the swing radius and the load path, taking direction from the operator and the signalperson
  • Stay on the job for the full run so the crews are not retraining a new hand mid-project

Required

  • Current forklift certification
  • Current OSHA 10
  • Hands-on time on a rough terrain forklift or an off-road telehandler
  • Skid steer experience
  • Able to work outdoors on an active construction site for the full 5+ month run
