General Description:
Working with the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the integrity of the organization’s accounting operations and financial reporting. This role oversees day-to-day accounting, month-end close, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, cash management, budget support, and financial compliance. The Controller partners with the CFO and program/department leaders to provide timely, accurate financial information, strengthen internal controls, and steward resources in support of the organization’s mission. Looking for a candidate with a desire for growth and longevity in the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee general ledger activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, allocations, and maintenance of the chart of accounts.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes; ensure timely and accurate financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash receipts, and disbursements; maintain appropriate segregation of duties.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports, dashboards, and variance analyses for leadership.
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes; collaborate with department leaders on budget development and monitoring.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls; document accounting policies and procedures and drive continuous process improvement.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit and preparation of required schedules, confirmations, and reports.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting standards and reporting requirements, including grant/contract reporting as assigned.
  • Oversee payroll processing support and related reconciliations in coordination with HR/Payroll providers (as applicable).
  • Manage accounting system administration and support accurate coding across programs, departments, and funding sources.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff; provide coaching, training, and performance feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operational needs of the organization.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility; nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation; experience with audits and internal controls.
  • Experience working with state contracts and insurance preferred
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Excel (pivot tables, lookups); experience with nonprofit fund accounting a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and leadership.
