Catalogers apply standardized metadata, subject headings, and classification systems to ensure accessibility and consistency. These roles may be remote or on-site and often require expertise in cataloging standards like MARC, RDA, or AACR2. Contractors typically work independently or with a team to meet specific cataloging needs within a set timeframe.

What kinds of materials will I typically work with in contract cataloging?

In a Contract Cataloging role, you'll likely handle a diverse range of materials, including books, audiovisual items, digital resources, archival collections, and sometimes unique or rare items, depending on the client organization. Your work will involve applying appropriate cataloging standards and metadata so that these resources can be easily discovered and accessed by patrons. You may work independently or as part of a remote or onsite project team with periodic meetings for coordination. This variety keeps the role engaging and helps you build expertise in different formats and subject areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in contract cataloging, and why are they important?

To excel in Contract Cataloging, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of cataloging standards (such as AACR2, RDA), and experience with library classification systems, often supported by a degree in library science or a related field. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), bibliographic utilities like OCLC Connexion, and metadata management tools is typically required. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate and efficient description and organization of library materials, supporting discovery and access for users.
