Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, healthcare settingsResearch institutions, biotech firms, healthcare facilities
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies developing BCI devices, research institutionsBiomedical companies, research labs focusing on neural systems

Both roles involve working with neural systems and require similar educational backgrounds. Contract Brain Computer Interface specialists focus on developing and implementing BCI devices, while Contract Neural Engineers work on understanding neural signals and designing neural interfaces. The main difference lies in their specific focus areas within neural technology development.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on a contract basis in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) projects?

One common challenge for contract professionals in BCI is quickly adapting to diverse project scopes and rapidly changing technologies. Since many teams are interdisciplinary, you may need to collaborate closely with neuroscientists, software engineers, and hardware specialists, which requires strong communication skills and flexibility. Additionally, contract roles often require independent time management and the ability to deliver results within tight deadlines, as projects can be highly research-driven and iterative. Building a network within the BCI community and staying updated with the latest advancements can help you overcome these challenges and succeed in a contract-based environment.

What are Contract Brain Computer Interface specialists?

Contract Brain Computer Interface (BCI) specialists are professionals hired on a contract basis to work on projects involving the development, implementation, or integration of technologies that connect the human brain with computers or external devices. These specialists may be involved in designing BCI systems, developing software and hardware, conducting research, or supporting clinical applications. Their work is often project-based and can span industries such as healthcare, neuroscience, gaming, and assistive technology. Contract BCI specialists typically have expertise in neuroscience, engineering, computer science, or related fields, and they bring their skills to organizations needing temporary or specialized BCI expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract BCI Engineer, you typically need expertise in neuroscience, signal processing, programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB), and a relevant degree in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or computer science. Familiarity with BCI hardware/software platforms, data acquisition systems, and certifications in neurotechnology tools are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you effectively work with interdisciplinary teams and adapt to project needs. These skills are crucial for developing innovative, reliable BCI solutions that translate neural signals into actionable data for real-world applications.

Suvi is seeking an Interface Development Specialist for the TSA Enterprise Architecture Support Team in Springfield, VA. Ideal candidates demonstrate strong customer service, subject matter expertise, mission dedication, and a solid work ethic. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!
The Interface Development Specialist designs, develops, and maintains interfaces and data exchanges that connect TSA's Enterprise Architecture tools, repositories, and external systems under the EASS contract. Reporting to the Program Lead and Lead Architect while directly supporting the Architecture & Data Management Branch (ADMB), this role ensures seamless interoperability between the EA Repository (Ins-Pi/YouDesign), ServiceNow (including CSDM), and other TSA/DHS platforms. The specialist also standardizes interfaces for Transportation Screening Equipment (TSE) and external applications, enabling efficient, secure, and reliable data flow that supports governance, reporting, modernization, and real-time decision-making for TSA's mission to protect the nation's transportation systems.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement APIs, XML interfaces, data feeds, and integration points between EA tools, the Ins-Pi/YouDesign repository, ServiceNow, and other TSA systems.
  • Create and maintain interface specification documentation, data exchange mappings, and integration approaches to ensure interoperability and compliance.
  • Standardize TSE interface connections using API methodology and streamline external interfaces used by TSA applications.
  • Perform extract, transform, load (ETL) processes, data cleansing, and troubleshooting for interface and data quality issues.
  • Support the integration of the EA Repository and metamodel with ServiceNow and the Common Service Data Model (CSDM).
  • Collaborate with the Tool/API Integrator, Modeling & Mapping Specialist, and domain architects to automate data feeds and ensure accurate information flow.
  • Provide recommendations for data interfaces and assist in reconciling information across systems to support governance, modernization, and reporting activities.
  • Participate in governance reviews and technology insertion evaluations with a focus on interface standards and interoperability.
  • Address optional or emerging interface requirements via contract modifications, negotiating costs as needed.

Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in interface development, API integration, and data exchange in enterprise or federal IT environments.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with API development (RESTful, SOAP, XML), ETL processes, and integration platforms.
  • Proficiency in ServiceNow, CSDM, and enterprise architecture tools/repositories.
  • Excellent technical documentation, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills:
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience supporting TSA, DHS, or other federal agencies with tool and system integrations.
  • Familiarity with Ins-Pi/YouDesign or similar EA modeling and repository tools.
  • Knowledge of federal data standards, metadata schemas, and compliance requirements (e.g., FITARA, OMB directives).
  • Certifications such as ServiceNow Certified Integration Specialist, API Management (MuleSoft, Apigee), or equivalent.
  • Background in Transportation Screening Equipment (TSE) data interfaces or aviation/security systems.
