What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract biosafety officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Biosafety Officer, you need expertise in biological risk assessment, biosafety regulations, and laboratory practices, typically supported by a degree in microbiology, biology, or a related field. Familiarity with biosafety management systems, risk assessment tools, and certifications such as Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) is often required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help ensure effective implementation of safety protocols and collaboration with laboratory staff. These competencies are essential for maintaining regulatory compliance, minimizing biological hazards, and protecting personnel and the environment.

What is the difference between Contract Biosafety vs Contract Laboratory Technician?

AspectContract BiosafetyContract Laboratory Technician
CredentialsBS or MS in Biological Sciences, Biosafety certificationsAssociate or Bachelor’s in Life Sciences, Laboratory certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biosafety cabinets, containment areasLaboratories, sample processing areas, testing facilities
Industry UsageResearch institutions, biotech, pharmaClinical labs, research facilities, diagnostics

Contract Biosafety professionals focus on safety protocols, risk assessments, and compliance in biosafety environments, while Contract Laboratory Technicians handle sample processing, testing, and data recording. Both roles are essential in laboratory settings but differ in responsibilities and required expertise.

What are some common challenges faced by contract biosafety professionals when working across multiple organizations?

Contract Biosafety professionals often manage biosafety compliance for several organizations simultaneously, which can present challenges such as adapting quickly to varying institutional policies, laboratory procedures, and regulatory requirements. They must be adept at communicating and building rapport with diverse teams, ensuring all stakeholders understand and implement best safety practices. Additionally, they need to stay up-to-date with changes in biosafety regulations and tailor risk assessments to the unique environments of each client. Strong organizational skills and flexibility are crucial for success in this dynamic role.

What is a contract biosafety professional?

Contract biosafety professionals are experts hired on a temporary or project basis to help organizations manage risks associated with handling biological agents and materials. They develop and implement biosafety protocols, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards. These professionals may work with research laboratories, healthcare institutions, or biotechnology companies to provide specialized safety guidance and training. Their role is crucial in preventing accidental exposures and ensuring safe working environments.

Job description

Primary Work Address: 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA, 02115
Current HHMI Employees, click here to apply via your Workday account.
Matthew Waldor wants to understand the principles that govern the interactions between enteric bacterial pathogens and their hosts. Waldor and his team, based at Brigham and Women's Hospital develop animal models and integrate pathogen- and host-directed profiling methods to probe pathogen and host biology during infection. The team often applies and develops emerging technologies to define the genes, proteins, and metabolites that mediate interactions between pathogens and their hosts. Knowledge from these studies is applied in the development of new therapeutics, including a live-attenuated cholera vaccine now being studied in clinical trials. More information about the lab and their work can be found by visiting https://www.waldorlab.com/ .
About the role:

You will ensure adequate supplies for experimental needs and oversee equipment maintenance, and serve as liaison to HHMI and host institution administrative offices. Given the lab's work with enteric bacterial pathogens and animal models (primarily mice), you will help manage biosafety compliance and animal protocol documentation and may support laboratory research and procedures by performing routine experimental techniques, such as preparation of media, buffers, and stock solutions. You will assist Dr. Waldor with personnel management and will handle standard administrative paperwork, such as new student/fellow intake and reimbursement as well assist with writing animal protocols and overseeing the lab's budget. The Lab Manager will also have the opportunity to have a primary role in research projects.

  • Maintain laboratory consumables and reagents inventories. Order and receive supplies and equipment.
  • Act as liaison between the laboratory and host biosafety and regulatory offices (Environmental Health and Safety, IACUC, Institutional Biosafety Committee) to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations governing work with bacterial pathogens and animal models.
  • Coordinate amendments and renewals for lab permits, licenses, and protocols, including animal protocols and biosafety approvals.
  • Oversee service contracts and repairs of laboratory equipment. Maintain records of asset locations and participate in periodic asset inventories.
  • Act as liaison between the lab and HHMI, and host institution administrative offices on issues such as procurement, MTAs, lab staff transitions, visas, budgets, and use of host accounts.
  • Develop laboratory guidelines, maintain procedures manuals, evaluate new materials and equipment, and create process improvements for the lab.
  • Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and, where applicable, in technical areas and complex processes; may plan for and provide working supervision to research technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
  • Manage adherence to institutional biosafety and animal care and use standards, keep compliance records/logs current, maintain current knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations, and liaise with host regulatory offices to ensure compliance and participate in periodic regulatory review.
