Job description

About This Role:

This position offers Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) support to Biogen's Cambridge operations, encompassing R&D laboratory activities. As the Biosafety Officer, you will manage EHS programs with an emphasis on Biosafety, Occupational Health, and general laboratory safety. You will be part of the Cambridge EHS team, collaborating with peers, your manager, client groups, and Corporate EHS to implement EHS programs in line with the Global EHS Policy and Management System. This role is pivotal in ensuring the safety of laboratory operations, facilitating risk assessments, and driving continuous improvement efforts. You will contribute significantly to maintaining a safe and compliant workplace, aligning with the organization's overarching goals and objectives.

What You'll Do:

  • Act as the Biosafety Officer responsible for managing and enhancing the Biosafety Program, including facilitating the Cambridge Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and conducting Biosafety Risk Assessments.
  • Partner with outsourced Occupational Health vendors to ensure contract deliverables, such as medical surveillance, injury management, wellness support, vaccination clinics, and emergency response.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact and subject matter expert on EHS policies and programs, including Biosafety, IACUC, Occupational Health, Vivarium Safety, Controlled Substances, Animal Allergies, and Respiratory Protection.
  • Provide leadership in EHS Program initiatives and maintain awareness of EHS regulations and compliance activities.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external clients and champion large projects and initiatives, including cross-functional and external partnerships.
  • Create, implement, and improve written EHS programs and develop training materials for classroom and on-the-job instruction.
  • Lead incident investigations, determine root causes, and identify corrective and preventative actions.
  • Conduct EHS inspections, document findings, work with area owners to implement corrective actions, and communicate results.
  • Participate in EHS stakeholder engagement events and activities, providing hands-on EHS support for laboratory design and construction projects.
  • Lead risk assessment evaluations to identify high risks and associated risk reduction actions.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, including being on-call, and coach and mentor junior staff, contract service providers, and supplemental staff.
  • Execute speaking opportunities with external stakeholders.

Required Skills:

  • 8+ years of EHS experience or relevant experience (inclusive of Military experience).
  • B.S. in life sciences, environmental field, or another related field required.
  • Experience implementing EHS programs, including Biosafety.

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced interpersonal skills focused on collaboration, innovation, and inclusion.
  • Experienced presenter and speaker; excellent writing skills.
  • Previous EHS-related work experience in the Biopharma field desired.
  • Experience interacting with external regulatory agencies desired.
  • Understanding of EHS management systems.
  • Professional certification (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Biosafety Professional).
  • Involvement with professional associations as a participant.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $113,000.00-$151,000.00


Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
