What is the difference between Contract Back End Developer vs Contract Front End Developer?

AspectContract Back End DeveloperContract Front End Developer
Required SkillsServer-side languages (e.g., Java, Python), databases, API developmentHTML, CSS, JavaScript, UI frameworks
Work EnvironmentBackend systems, server management, database integrationClient-side interfaces, user experience design
Common CertificationsNone specific, but backend certifications (e.g., AWS, Oracle) are commonNone specific, but front end certifications (e.g., React, Angular) are common

Contract Back End Developers focus on server-side logic, databases, and API development, while Contract Front End Developers work on user interfaces and client-side functionality. Both roles require technical skills but differ in their focus areas within software development.

What are some common challenges faced by contract back end developers when integrating with existing systems?

Contract back end developers often encounter challenges such as limited documentation, legacy codebases, and varying technology stacks when integrating with existing systems. Navigating these complexities requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar architectures. Effective communication with internal teams is crucial to clarify requirements and ensure seamless integration, especially within tight project timelines. Adaptability and proactive collaboration can help overcome these hurdles and deliver robust solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Back End Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Back End Developer, you need strong skills in server-side programming languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and API development, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and containerization tools such as Docker is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver quality work on tight schedules. These skills ensure you can build scalable, reliable back end systems that meet client requirements and project deadlines.

What are Contract Back End Developers?

Contract Back End Developers are software professionals who specialize in building and maintaining the server-side components of web applications on a contractual basis. They focus on databases, server logic, APIs, and integration with front-end systems to ensure smooth functionality and performance. Unlike full-time employees, contract developers are typically hired for specific projects or time frames, offering flexibility to both the developer and the employer. They often work with languages like Java, Python, Node.js, or Ruby and must be adept at collaborating with front-end teams and stakeholders.

Job description

Opiniion is a resident satisfaction software that partners with property management companies to create better living experiences for their residents. Our platform has helped thousands of property managers collect and act on real-time feedback, improve resident experiences, and enhance their online reputation. Opiniion is committed to exceptional service and innovation, earning recognition as one of America's fastest-growing private companies. Driven by a forward-thinking team, we're shaping the future of resident engagement. Our continued growth and commitment to innovation make this an exciting time to be part of our team!
LOCATION: Lehi, UT
THE ROLE
As a Full-Stack Developer at Opiniion, you'll help build and improve the products our customers use every day, working across the stack to ship features, improve reliability, and support a fast-moving product and engineering team.
This seat leans toward the core platform and backend. We're migrating from MongoDB to PostgreSQL across a complex Node.js application, and we need someone who can own that work: design the schema, execute a safe migration, and help the team write better application code on the other side. You'll go deep on backend and data while still contributing across front-end and back-end product work as priorities shift.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Write and maintain Node.js (TypeScript) API services and Python scripts.
  • Architect the relational schema from our existing document-based data model.
  • Design and execute a zero-downtime migration strategy (dual-write, expand-contract, and similar patterns).
  • Own database performance: indexing, query analysis, and connection pooling.
  • Work across MongoDB and PostgreSQL to read, process, and optimize data.
  • Contribute across the full stack, from front-end product work to back-end services, as the team's priorities move.

HOW WE BUILD WITH AI
AI is part of how we build. We expect engineers to use AI tools thoughtfully in their daily development to move faster and ship better work, while keeping sound engineering judgment. Claude is our primary AI platform.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • True full-stack range: comfortable on the front end (JavaScript or TypeScript with a modern framework, Vue preferred, React welcome) and on the back end (services and APIs in Node.js and/or Python).
  • Strong SQL and solid relational data fundamentals (joins, CTEs, window functions, indexing).
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, including auth flows (OAuth, API keys, token refresh), pagination, rate limiting, and error handling.
  • Comfortable in AWS (RDS, S3, ECS or Lambda, IAM basics) and using Docker for local development.
  • Disciplined with Git, pull requests, CI/CD, testing, and clear documentation.
  • Have shipped a production NoSQL to relational migration and can walk us through it.
  • Deep PostgreSQL knowledge (JSONB, CTEs, window functions, transactions, EXPLAIN ANALYZE).
  • Strong, autonomous Node.js and TypeScript skills, with a habit of putting data integrity first and speed second.

HOW YOU WORK
  • Ownership mindset: you treat what you ship as your responsibility, not just your code. When something breaks, you care about the fix and the prevention.
  • Strong communicator: you set clear expectations, surface problems early, and write things down so the team doesn't run on tribal knowledge.
  • Collaborative and low-ego: you give thoughtful code reviews, help teammates through blockers, and keep learning.
  • Autonomous: you can take a well-scoped problem and drive it to done, while knowing when to ask for help.

NICE-TO-HAVES
  • Experience with schema migration tooling (we use Drizzle).
  • Strong computer science fundamentals and prior backend architecture ownership.
  • Experience in SaaS or other product-led software environments.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB internals and NoSQL-to-relational migration patterns.

OUR TECHNOLOGY STACK
  • TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Vue.js, Node.js
  • AWS, Docker
  • MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Drizzle
  • GitHub, CircleCI
