Contract Arduino Programming information

What is contract Arduino programming?

Contract Arduino programming refers to hiring a programmer or developer on a contractual basis to create, modify, or troubleshoot software for Arduino microcontroller projects. These professionals typically work on a temporary or project-by-project basis, helping clients with tasks such as prototyping, sensor integration, automation, and custom hardware solutions. The work can range from writing simple sketches to developing complex embedded systems, depending on the client's needs. Contract Arduino programmers may also assist with hardware selection, debugging, and documentation to ensure the success of an electronics project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Arduino programmer?

To thrive as a Contract Arduino Programmer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and electronics fundamentals, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with the Arduino IDE, microcontroller platforms, circuit design tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective client communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for delivering robust, reliable solutions that meet client specifications within tight deadlines.

What are some typical challenges contract Arduino programmers face when working with clients on short-term projects?

Contract Arduino programmers often encounter challenges such as unclear project specifications, tight deadlines, and limited access to client hardware for testing. Communication is key, as clients may not always have a technical background, making it important to clarify requirements and expectations early. Additionally, contract programmers must be adaptable, frequently troubleshooting hardware and software issues independently while ensuring that their code is well-documented for client handover.

What is the difference between Contract Arduino Programming vs Contract Embedded Systems Developer?

AspectContract Arduino ProgrammingContract Embedded Systems Developer
CredentialsBasic electronics knowledge, Arduino certificationsAdvanced electronics, microcontroller certifications, embedded systems training
Work EnvironmentPrototyping labs, maker spaces, small-scale projectsIndustrial settings, manufacturing, complex hardware integration
Industry UsageHobbyist projects, educational tools, small startupsAutomotive, aerospace, medical devices, large tech companies

Contract Arduino Programming typically involves developing code for Arduino microcontrollers in prototyping or educational contexts, requiring basic electronics skills. In contrast, Contract Embedded Systems Developers work on complex embedded hardware across industries, often requiring advanced certifications and experience. Both roles involve embedded programming but differ significantly in scope, complexity, and industry application.

With a 30+ year legacy and millions of devices deployed, IPCMobile is committed to delivering best-in-class hardware and software solutions that empower operators with advanced data capture, barcode scanning, inventory control, UHF RFID, and asset tracking. Our mission is to help companies realize operational efficiency and extend business to mobile and offline environments — even in the most remote locations. Sustaining Engineer ILocal candidates only. Relocation / H-1B is not offered.** This position is In-Office Monday through Friday — NOT REMOTE **

SUMMARY:Sustaining Engineer I is a technical role responsible for driving product continuity and manufacturing excellence through a balance of design engineering and technical documentation for electromechanical designs solutions for stationary, mobile, and wearable data acquisition and payment products. This position provides Level 3 technical support by collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders, including contract manufacturers and vendors, to resolve production challenges. A key aspect of this role is the integration of product engineering elements—such as design optimization, 3D modeling, and prototyping—with the usage of engineering change orders (ECOs) and test plans. The successful candidate will ensure that electromechanical products are not only technically sound and optimized for performance but also supported by high-quality documentation that meets all specifications throughout the production lifecycle.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as the Level 3 technical point of contact for contract manufacturers (CMs) and vendors to resolve production bottlenecks and permit products to reach or continue manufacturing.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for production failures or component defects and develop effective Corrective Action Plans.
  • Support the Lead Engineer with design, prototyping, and documentation tasks in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, including modifying 3D models and updating 2D drawings for existing product lines.
  • Lead the documentation process for Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) by obtaining necessary data, generating change notifications, and managing the formal release workflow.
  • Assist w/ generating, reviewing, and executing detailed test plans to validate design changes or to troubleshoot vendor-supplied component issues.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to engineering drawings to ensure clear communication of requirements to external vendors.
  • Use basic hand tools to perform physical inspections, basic prototyping, or testing components received from suppliers.
  • Maintain organized technical documentation and project files within Windows environments and the Microsoft Office Suite to support quality audits.

(This description is meant to be a guide it does not include every responsibility of role.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in a mechanical, electro-mechanical, or quality engineering environment, including relevant internships.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Understanding of manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, die casting, machining, and metal forming.
  • Design Principles: Ability to apply DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) to allow for cost-effective production of components and serviceability.
  • Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of GD&T and industry-standard documentation practices.
  • Technical Methods: Exposure to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the development of Corrective Action Plans.
  • Practical Skills: Ability to use basic hand tools and measurement equipment for part verification.
  • Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks, Windows Operating Systems, and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Communication: Technical writing skills and the ability to professionally interface with external vendors and contract manufacturers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Basic programming skills, specifically with Python or Arduino, for automating test sequences or developing simple data collection tools.
  • Experience in a Product Engineering environment with an emphasis on iterative design and prototyping.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
  • Ability to perform light lifting of up to 25 pounds, primarily for handling product prototypes, tooling, or small components during testing and inspection.

BENEFITS:
  • Competitive Salary + Bonuses
  • A full suite of traditional benefits – Great healthcare
