What is continuing education?

Continuing education refers to learning activities and programs that adults participate in after completing their formal education. These opportunities help individuals update their skills, earn new credentials, or pursue personal and professional development. Continuing education can include workshops, online courses, certifications, or degree programs and is often required in certain professions to maintain licenses or stay current with industry standards. It benefits both individuals seeking career advancement and employers who want a skilled workforce.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a continuing education specialist?

To thrive as a Continuing Education Specialist, you need expertise in curriculum development, adult learning principles, and program management, usually supported by a degree in education or a related field. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS), instructional design software, and relevant certifications (like ATD or CPLP) is often expected. Strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to engage diverse adult learners are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the effective delivery of educational programs that meet the needs of adult learners and organizational goals.

What are the most common challenges faced by professionals working in continuing education, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Continuing Education often encounter challenges such as keeping course offerings relevant in a rapidly changing job market, engaging adult learners with diverse backgrounds, and managing multiple programs simultaneously. Building strong communication with learners and collaborating with instructors or subject matter experts are also key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a positive learning experience.

Position Summary

The Senior Director of Continuing and Professional Education provides strategic and operational leadership for the university's continuing and professional education portfolio, with direct responsibility for academic noncredit support, professional education, lifelong learning and personal enrichment (including OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), and conference services. This position leads a complex, evolving unit to strengthen program performance, modernize systems, and build sustainable growth across multiple business lines and in concert with academic partners.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for UO Online and Continuing and Professional Education, the Senior Director partners closely with academic leaders, faculty, enrollment and marketing teams, information services, finance, and external organizations to develop, launch, and scale high-quality offerings that meet workforce, learner, and community needs.
