Job description


Elementary Special Education Coordinator and Teacher
Position Purpose 


  • Provide direction, guidance and supervision of special education caseloads for Little Harbour School through coordination with Director of Pupil Supports and Services within the district
  • Under the general supervision of the School Principal, maximize the learning experience of students with special needs, in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment for students


Essential Functions 
1. Supervise the special education caseloads for Little Harbour School
2. Chair student referral team, assume an LEA representative role at IEP meetings as assigned, function as a certified special educator on evaluation and IEP teams, as needed
3. Provide guidance around consistent team meeting formats and documentation of special education records
4. Oversee NH Special Education data system and manage the information needed for the annual child count deadline and other state reports
5. Communicate effectively with parents, administration, and other agencies
6. Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of special education staff, including paraprofessionals
7. Other duties as assigned by Director including possible additional workdays beginning/end of school year
8. Coordinate compliance with all federal and state statutes pertaining to special education students
9. Supervise the implementation of general program procedures, as well as all students' individual education plans, and advise teams when necessary
10. Work with school personnel to communicate and coordinate system of interventions and services for elementary aged students
11. Provide special education instruction/support in academic, daily living, communication, and behavioral skills in inclusive and pullout environments as needed
12. Case management; testing and evaluations, development, implementation and monitoring of IEP goals, services and accomodations
13. Participates as an active member of PLC teams and professional trainings throughout the year
14. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the education field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile 
Certification/License: 



  • State Certification as a Special Education Teacher.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. 


Education:  

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree in Special Education

  
Experience: 

  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
