What does a content optimization manager do?

A Content Optimization Manager is responsible for improving the performance and effectiveness of digital content across websites, blogs, and social media. Their main tasks include analyzing user data, implementing SEO strategies, and ensuring that content is engaging and aligned with business goals. They collaborate with writers, designers, and marketers to optimize content for both search engines and audience engagement. By regularly monitoring key metrics, they make data-driven decisions to maximize content reach and impact.

What are some common challenges content optimization managers face when aligning content strategies with SEO goals?

Content Optimization Managers often encounter challenges when balancing user-focused content with technical SEO requirements. They must ensure that content is engaging and valuable to readers while also optimizing for search engine algorithms, which can sometimes have conflicting priorities. Additionally, staying updated with frequent changes in SEO best practices and communicating these updates to cross-functional teams can be demanding. Effective collaboration with writers, designers, and developers is essential to implement optimization strategies without compromising the brand's voice or user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a content optimization manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Content Optimization Manager, you need expertise in SEO, content strategy, analytics, and digital marketing, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in content management. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, SEMrush, CMS platforms, and A/B testing software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate and drive continuous improvement. These skills and qualities are crucial for maximizing content performance, increasing audience engagement, and achieving business goals.

Job description

Description

This is the in-house SEO role for someone who cut their teeth at an agency and is ready to own a program of their own at an award-winning Nevada law firm. You will run the day-to-day of our search program: executing content strategy, publishing and quality-checking new website pages, managing freelance writers and editors, directing our backlink team, and supporting website optimization and new site development. You will not be doing this alone. Our Director of Marketing has more than ten years in SEO and will partner with you on strategy, so you get high-level direction and mentorship while you drive the work and grow into a broader leadership role.

Reports to: Director of Marketing (10+ years in SEO, hands-on strategy partner)

Type: Full-time

Who You Are

The ideal candidate has a few years at an agency and wants to go in-house to see work through from strategy to results, on one brand they can be proud of.

  • Agency-trained: 2 to 4 years in an SEO or digital agency, ready for an in-house home.
  • Competitive: you want to win the SERP and you keep score.
  • Hungry to learn: you take direction well, ask good questions, and level up fast.
  • Productive: you ship high-quality work consistently and manage your own time.
  • Ownership-minded: you would rather own outcomes than hand off tickets.

Key Responsibilities

Content strategy & editorial

  • Execute and help shape the SEO content roadmap alongside the Director: keyword and competitor research, topic prioritization, and the quarterly content plan across Personal Injury, Workers Compensation, and Social Security Disability practices.
  • Own the editorial calendar, brief contributors, and keep production on schedule.

Content production, publishing & QA

  • Oversee creation of new website pages and blog content from brief to publish.
  • Quality-check every piece for accuracy, on-page SEO, readability, and brand voice before it goes live.
  • Publish and format content in WordPress, including metadata, internal links, and schema.
  • Route practice-area legal content for attorney review prior to publishing.

Freelance team management

  • Recruit, onboard, and manage a bench of freelance writers and editors.
  • Set standards and templates, give feedback, and hold contributors to quality and deadlines.

Backlink / off-page

  • Manage the backlink team or agency: set targets, approve target sites and anchor strategy, and review link quality and relevance.
  • Track referring domains and authority growth, and flag or disavow toxic links.

Website optimization & development

  • Identify and prioritize on-page and site optimization opportunities.
  • Scope and manage technical and development work with our developers, including new page builds and new site development projects.
  • Own technical SEO health: crawlability, indexation, schema, redirects, and Core Web Vitals.

Analytics, reporting & compliance

  • Report on rankings, traffic, and conversions, tying SEO work back to leads and signed cases.
  • Maintain conversion tracking and coordinate with marketing on attribution.
  • Ensure content and pages meet attorney advertising and disclosure requirements before publishing.

Requirements

  • 2 to 4 years of SEO experience, ideally at an agency.
  • Hands-on content and on-page SEO experience, with strong editing instincts.
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, schema, and technical SEO fundamentals.
  • Comfort coordinating freelancers, developers, and a backlink team.
  • Fluency with SEO tooling (Ahrefs or Semrush, Google Search Console, GA4) and clear reporting.
  • Excellent written English, highly organized, and self-directed in a remote setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Legal, healthcare, or other YMYL / high-intent local SEO experience.
  • Experience overseeing AI-assisted content with a human editing and review process.
  • Local SEO and Google Business Profile experience across multiple locations.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) a plus.
