Salary: $60,000 $70,000 annual base salary plus bonus opportunity, commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.

Job Summary:

Old Dominion Heat Trace seeks a motivated Takeoff Engineer to join our Preconstruction Team. This position is an excellent opportunity for both entry-level candidates with a strong work ethic and experienced estimators looking to grow their careers in the construction industry

Partnering with general contractors, mechanical contractors, and building owners to provide best-in-class heat trace solutions for projects across the U.S., serving a wide range of market sectors.

The Takeoff Engineer plays a key role in preparing accurate project budgets, assisting with bids, and ensuring our team is well-prepared throughout the preconstruction phase. This role offers hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and a clear path for career development within a company that values safety, precision, and growth.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing, and other duties will be assigned based on the positions role within the business unit.

  • Conduct pre-bid document review by reading and interpreting project specifications and documents
  • Use take-off software to generate quality project take-offs
  • Double check estimates
  • Create and maintain estimating and project logs with key deliverables and due dates
  • Request and verify quotes from suppliers and others to identify accurate costs in accordance with the scope of work
  • Track and update customer and supplier information, and manage local database
  • Assist and support estimators in the bid process
  • Deliver bids and other time sensitive documents, as needed, to the project owner and others
  • Review purchase orders and change orders, and costs changes
  • Communicate effectively with general contractors, owners, suppliers, and other customers and team members
  • Collect, analyze, and communicate information, data, and trends as needed by the estimating team for reporting purposes
  • Filing, organizing, scanning, and other administrative tasks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Applied Science, Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of academic and work experience in the construction industry.
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction processes and costs
  • Ability to read, understand, and navigate construction blueprints, plans, and project specifications
  • Ability to multi-task, meet strict deadlines, and manage time and priorities effectively
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and other trade partners
  • Strong math and analytical skills
  • Highly organized and detail-orientated
  • Team-oriented
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and other computer applications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience reading and interpreting plans and specifications
  • Previous experience using onscreen take-off software (e.g., Bluebeam)
  • Preferred - Bilingual in Spanish and English

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Able to walk, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, squat and climb.
  • Able to travel to jobsites, meetings, and other destinations as needed.
  • Able to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Able to see, talk and hear in person, via phone and/or through online/video.
  • Able to use hands and fingers in a manner that allows for use of a keyboard and phone.
  • Able to lift & carry items up to 10 lbs.
