What is a construction controller?

A Construction Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial management of a construction company or project. They handle budgeting, cost control, financial reporting, and compliance with accounting standards. Their role involves monitoring project expenses, analyzing financial data, and ensuring profitability. They also work closely with project managers and executives to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a construction controller?

In a construction firm, a Construction Controller's daily responsibilities often include overseeing project budgets, reviewing and approving invoices, managing financial reporting, and reconciling accounts specific to ongoing projects. They frequently collaborate with project managers, estimators, and executives to ensure financial information is accurate and all compliance requirements are met. Additionally, controllers monitor cash flow, prepare forecasts, and may provide financial analysis for new bids or change orders. This role generally involves a mix of independent work and teamwork, requiring strong communication skills to interface effectively across departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a construction controller?

To excel as a Construction Controller, you need a solid background in accounting or finance, strong analytical skills, and familiarity with construction industry practices, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Experience with accounting software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (Timberline), Procore, or similar project management systems is highly valuable, as are certifications like CPA or CMA. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with project managers and stakeholders are important soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate financial tracking, streamlined budgeting, and effective coordination with teams to keep construction projects on budget and on schedule.

Is a construction controller a high level position?

A construction controller is typically a mid- to senior-level management role responsible for overseeing project budgets, financial reporting, and cost control. While it involves significant responsibility, it is generally not considered an executive or top-level position, which are often held by project managers or directors. The role requires strong financial skills and industry knowledge but usually reports to higher management.

Job description

Construction Controller | Downtown Toronto

$100,000 - $120,000 + benefits

This isn’t a corporate accounting role.

I’m working with an Ontario-based construction company in the Downtown Toronto core looking for a hands-on Construction Controller who understands how project finances actually work - not just month-end close.

They run on QuickBooks, so experience working within that environment (or something very similar) matters.

What matters:

  • 5+ years in construction accounting (GC, developer, or similar environment)
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, progress billing, and holdbacks
  • Experience managing cash flow tied to active projects
  • Comfortable operating in a lean team - both strategic and hands-on
  • Ability to work directly with ownership, PMs, and site teams

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own full-cycle accounting + financial reporting
  • Manage job cost tracking, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Oversee billing cycles, lien holdbacks, and subcontractor payments
  • Maintain and optimize processes within QuickBooks
  • Bring structure and visibility to the financial side of the business

What this is not:

  • Not a high-level “review-only” Controller role
  • Not a siloed finance function
  • Not a place to sit removed from operations

You’ll be tied directly to projects, decisions, and performance.

Compensation:

$100K – $120K base + benefits
