Job description

Barton Malow is currently seeking an Estimator to join our Commercial Group based in the Southfield, Michigan office. This individual will participate in preparing estimates and have a role on preconstruction teams for project pursuits, using construction management, hard-bid, design-build, and conceptual estimating methods for small to large scale projects in the Healthcare, Sports, Education, and Commercial markets.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities (*Essential Functions):
  • Participate in estimate preparation for variety of contract types including CM, design-build, and lump sum
  • Interact and effectively communicate with clients and team members
  • Perform typical estimating facets such as:
    • Detailed quantity take-offs and organizing the quantities with unit pricing in production of an estimate
    • Solicit bids and quotes from subcontractors and suppliers
    • Communicate effectively with subcontractors and suppliers to clarify pricing information
    • Prepare estimate formats in such areas as general conditions, general bidding, quantity takeoffs, and bid analysis
  • Write or review detailed scopes of work for construction contracts to be implemented by Project Delivery
  • Work with Project Delivery in the Procurement of trade work
  • Assist staff members with various special projects related to overall preconstruction and estimating efforts
  • Develop estimates utilizing Autodesk, Destini, WinEst, Excel, and other programs

Job Specifications (*Essential Requirements):
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • 2+ years experience in construction estimating with a Construction Management or General Contracting firm
  • Market experience preferred in, but not all required, K-12, healthcare, sports, higher education, general commercial
  • Experience with competitive design-build and hard bid
  • Experience in developing and implementing value engineering solutions to drive down project costs for the Owner while maintaining a high level of construction quality
  • Working knowledge of trades: scope, time frames, field execution and potential risks/exposures
  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge about estimating processes and delivery methods
