What is construction accounting?

Construction accounting is a specialized branch of accounting that focuses on tracking, managing, and reporting the financial aspects of construction projects. Unlike standard accounting, it deals with unique challenges such as job costing, progress billing, contract retainage, and project-based financial management. Construction accountants ensure that project expenses, revenues, and budgets are accurately monitored, helping companies make informed decisions and remain compliant with industry regulations.

How does a construction accountant typically interact with project managers and site supervisors?

Construction Accountants regularly collaborate with project managers and site supervisors to track project budgets, monitor expenses, and ensure accurate cost allocation. They often participate in weekly meetings to discuss financial progress, address discrepancies, and forecast cash flow needs. This close communication helps resolve issues quickly, keeps projects on budget, and ensures everyone is aligned on financial expectations throughout each phase of construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in construction accounting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Construction Accounting, you need a strong understanding of accounting principles, job costing, and financial reporting, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with construction-specific software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (Timberline), Procore, or QuickBooks, as well as certifications like CPA, are highly valuable. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help professionals manage complex projects and coordinate with contractors and project managers. These skills ensure accurate budgeting, compliance, and financial control, which are crucial for the profitability and success of construction projects.

What is the difference between Construction Accounting vs Bookkeeper in the construction industry?

Bookkeepers handle basic financial record-keeping and data entry, typically with less specialized training. While both roles deal with financial data, construction accounting is more comprehensive and strategic, tailored to the construction industry's unique needs.

What does a construction accountant do?

A construction accountant manages financial records for construction projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, and invoicing. They ensure compliance with financial regulations and often use accounting software to monitor project expenses and profitability.

Beyond the blueprint, our team of dedicated professionals sees each project as a partnership in realizing our clients' goals. From the initial stages through project completion, we provide insightful guidance, innovative solutions, and steadfast assistance.

Spanning Commercial, Institutional, and Residential sectors, our firm thrives on diverse and engaging projects. We prioritize a close-knit community and supportive environment, essential to our success as employee owners. At Wright-Ryan, we take pride in our reputation and our role in shaping Maine's great spaces.

Wright-Ryan Construction is seeking an experienced, strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive leadership team. As CFO, you will shape the financial direction of a respected, employee-owned construction company known for quality craftsmanship, strong relationships, and sustainable growth.

The CFO will partner with company leadership and operational teams to drive profitability, guide strategic decision-making, manage enterprise risk, and support long-term growth across multiple business lines. As an employee-owned company, the CFO also plays a key role in overseeing the companyโ€™s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and ensuring long-term financial stability for the organization and its employee-owners.

If you are a collaborative financial leader with deep experience in the construction industry, strong business acumen, and a passion for building high-performing teams, weโ€™d love to hear from you.

Job Requirements
  • Lead the companyโ€™s overall financial strategy, ensuring strong cash flow, profitability, and long-term financial stability across all business lines.
  • Manage enterprise risk, including insurance, bonding capacity, and financial compliance, while maintaining strong relationships with providers and sureties.
  • Oversee and manage the companyโ€™s investment portfolio and capital allocation strategies to optimize returns and support growth.
  • Administer and provide strategic oversight of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), including share valuation, share price determination, repurchase obligations, and loan management.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives through participation in the corporate strategic planning process in partnership with other leaders.
  • Develop and manage annual and monthly budgets for internal departments and multiple business units, driving accountability and cost control.
  • Deliver accurate, timely monthly financial statements, WIP reports, and performance dashboards to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor project performance through job cost tracking, percentage-of-completion accounting, and profitability analysis to protect margins.
  • Lead and develop the finance team to ensure high performance and operational excellence.
  • Oversee AR, AP, and working capital management to maintain liquidity and meet operational demands.
  • Establish financial discipline through standardized policies, internal controls, and documented SOPs for accounting, payroll, and reporting functions.
Education, Experience, and Skills
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (Masterโ€™s preferred).
  • 10+ years of financial leadership experience, including senior roles such as Controller, VP of Finance, or CFO.
  • Direct experience in the general contracting or construction industry required.
  • Experience with ESOP oversight and administration strongly preferred.
  • CPA or other financial certification is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of construction accounting, including job cost accounting, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, margin analysis, and cash flow management.
  • Strong understanding of bonding, insurance, banking relationships, and financial compliance.
  • Experience translating financial data into actionable business insights that guide operational decision-making.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to executive leadership and Board members.
  • High integrity, attention to detail, and a commitment to building strong financial governance.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to balance big-picture planning and operational detail.
  • Collaborative partner who works effectively across teams and business units.
  • Skilled at navigating complex project environments and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accounting software.
  • Experience with Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (CRE) preferred.
Pay and Benefits

As a 100% employee-owned company, each employee owner shares in our financial success by receiving shares of company stock at no cost through our ESOP!

In addition to the many benefits of employee-ownership, we offer competitive pay and excellent benefits including an annual bonus pay plan, 401(k) retirement plan with match, insurance (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and accident), paid time off, tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
