JOB SUMMARYย 

Theย Landย Conservation Specialistย advances the mission of Colorado West Land Trust byย identifying, developing, andย completing landย protection projects that meet the goals and initiativesย establishedย by the Conservationย Planย and Conservationย Director. S/he will work closely with landowners, service providers, and funders and must be able to build andย maintainย friendly relationships, and professional and courteous communications with a diverse variety of constituents and stakeholders.ย Theย Landย Conservation Specialistโ€™s primary assignment is the Land Protection program; s/he will also provide supportย inย conservation easementย monitoringย and stewardship. S/he must be able to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines,ย be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, andย be willing and able to speak in public. Theย Conservation Specialistย is personable, detail oriented, and is flexible with the ability to respond well to changing priorities.ย 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESย 

As a key member of the Colorado West Land Trust team, the Landย Conservation Specialistย performs all duties collaboratively, contributing to a cooperative and supportive work environment. All actions and initiatives are undertaken in alignment with the overarching goals and priorities defined through organizational planning under the guidance of the Conservation Director, ensuring that progress is consistent with CWLTโ€™s mission and strategicย direction.ย 


Land Conservationย ย 

  • Work closely with the Conservation Director toย identify, recommend, and develop new land protection opportunities and initiatives as outlined in the Conservation Plan.ย 
  • Work with landownersย to developย conservation agreements. Work with CWLT legal counsel to draftย conservation easements to ensure they meet CWLTโ€™s goalsย andย Land Trust Allianceย Standards and Practices while meeting the needs of the individual landowners.ย 
  • Ensure all stepsย and due diligenceย for easementย and acquisitionย projects are professionally completed including landowner negotiation, title work,ย appraisals,ย environmental hazard assessments, baseline documentation,ย budgeting,ย andย requiredย record keeping, fromย inceptionย to completion.ย 
  • Work with the Conservation Director to take projects through an organizational pipeline including intake,ย timelyย follow up, tracking, prioritizing, and advancing projects to completion.ย 
  • Work with Conservation Director to apply for land protection and transaction cost funding;ย implementย and report onย funding receivedย 
  • In coordination with the Development Team, planย outreach events andย giveย presentationsย toย provideย information on conservation easements, the process,ย andย conservation easementย benefits to a wide range of audiences.ย 
  • Updateย LOCATEย database with project information, status,ย and communications.ย 
  • Prepareย andย submitย reports,ย andย giveย presentationsย forย the Lands Committee, CWLT Board,ย fundersย andย partners.ย 


Stewardship and Monitoringย ย 

  • Conduct and document annual monitoring of an assigned portfolio of conservation easement and fee propertiesย in accordance withย CWLT policies and Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices.ย 
  • Field landowner inquiries, passing questions toย appropriate conservationย staff.ย 
  • Updateย LOCATEย database with landownerย changes,ย property changes, and relevant communications.ย

  • Build andย maintainย positive collegial relationships within the Conservation Team andย CWLT staff at large.ย 
  • Establishย and sustainย cordial, productive,ย and trustworthyย relationships with landowners, funders,ย and external partners.ย ย

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelorโ€™sย degree in conservation, natural resources, range management, or a related field;ย orย equivalent experience in one or more of the following areas: land conservation, stewardship, real estate transaction, or conservation easement monitoring.ย 
  • Experience with grant writing preferred.ย 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Power Point, Word, Publisher).ย 
  • Experience with database applications orย a demonstratedย proficiencyย in learning to use software.ย 
  • Demonstrated ability inย theย interpersonal skillsย requiredย toย accomplishย the duties listed in โ€œProfessionalism and teamworkโ€ย including communication, collaboration,ย problem solving, and time management.ย 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, negotiate solutions, and find common ground with diverseย constituencies.ย 
  • Willing and able to speak in public, experience in public speaking preferred.ย 
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to drive safely in urban, rural and some backcountry environments requiring 4-wheel drive.ย

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.ย 
  • Occasionally traverse rough outdoor terrain such as gravel and packed dirt, uneven ground, and navigate around obstacles.ย
