Job description

Are you a mechanically skilled individual with a talent for problem solving? The Indianapolis Zoo is looking for a Mechanic/ General Maintenance Technician who will go above and beyond for our members and guests while supporting the reliability and safety of Zoo operations.

This role focuses on technical excellence, preventive maintenance, and delivering solutions in a proactive and collaborative manner. This position requires a professional attitude, strong attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
What You'll Do
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair rides, specialty vehicles, and other mechanical systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on rides, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Assist the Facilities Manager in maintaining safe, compliant, and reliable operations across all equipment and systems.
  • Keep accurate, detailed maintenance and inspection records; assist with annual inspections and compliance requirements.
  • Apply skills across multiple trades, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, welding, fabrication, and engine repair.
  • Support general maintenance work in plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Manager to address safety concerns and improve system reliability.
  • Operate aerial lifts, forklifts, snow removal equipment, and manual transmission vehicles safely.
  • Participate in seasonal event support and adjust schedules as needed.
  • This roles schedule will be either Sunday through Thursday (Shift A), or Tuesday through Saturday (Shift B). Hours will shift based on seasonal demands.

What We're Looking For
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, welding, or related trades.
  • General maintenance skills in plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs. occasionally / 50 lbs. frequently; ability to work at heights with fall protection.
  • Valid Indiana driver's license (or ability to obtain within 30 days) and insurable by Zoo policy.
  • Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Commitment to safety, professionalism, and teamwork.

Bonus Points
  • Technical certifications in mechanical, electrical, or related trades.
  • Experience working with complex mechanical systems or similar equipment.
