Job description

Overview

The Conscious Sedation RN I provides safe, compassionate, and effective nursing care to

patients undergoing procedures requiring moderate/conscious sedation. This role is responsible

for patient assessment, monitoring, medication administration, education, and recovery while

developing competency in conscious sedation practices. Training and competency development

will be provided.


Responsibilities

  • Provide safe and effective nursing care to patients undergoing procedures requiring conscious sedation.
  • Assess patients before, during, and after procedures to identify changes in condition and ensure safe care.
  • Monitor vital signs, level of consciousness, respiratory status, cardiac status, and response to sedation.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders, established protocols, and scope of practice.
  • Develop competency in conscious sedation management through training, education, and supervised clinical experience.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members to support individualized patient care and sedation plans.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the conscious sedation process, procedure, recovery, and post-procedure care.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to adverse reactions or changes in patient condition, following established protocols and training.
  • Ensure sedation, monitoring, emergency equipment, and supplies are available and functioning properly.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient assessments, medications, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe patient-care environment in accordance with infection control standards.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, standards of nursing practice, and regulatory requirements related to conscious sedation.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards of professional nursing practice.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and address patient and family needs and concerns throughout the care experience.
  • Demonstrate compassion, empathy, professionalism, and respect in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and promote a positive patient experience.
  • Participate in ongoing education, training, and competency validation to maintain and enhance clinical skills.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the continuous improvement of conscious sedation practices.
  • Promote a culture of patient safety and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties within the RN's scope of practice as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience.
  • 0-1 year of relevant procedural/sedation experience preferred.
  • Moderate/conscious sedation experience not required; training provided.
  • PACU, Pre-Op, OR, procedural nursing, or similar experience ideal.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, critical-thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete required conscious sedation training and competency validation.
  • Ability to demonstrate competency in emergency response following required training.
