What does a configuration management manager do?

A Configuration Management Manager oversees the processes and tools used to track and control changes in software, hardware, documentation, and other key assets throughout a project's lifecycle. They ensure that all systems remain consistent, reliable, and well-documented by implementing configuration management policies and procedures. Their responsibilities often include managing configuration databases, leading audits, and coordinating with different teams to maintain the integrity of products or systems. This role is critical in industries like IT, engineering, and manufacturing, where maintaining accurate records and version control is essential for quality and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a configuration management manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Management Manager, you need expertise in configuration management processes, change control, and a relevant technical or engineering background, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or industry certifications like ITIL or CMII. Familiarity with configuration management tools such as ServiceNow, Jira, or IBM Rational, and experience with standards like ISO 9001 or CMMI, are typically required. Strong leadership, organizational skills, and attention to detail, alongside effective communication, make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring system integrity, minimizing errors, and supporting efficient project delivery in complex technical environments.

What are some common challenges configuration management managers face when implementing new processes across teams?

Configuration Management Managers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, ensuring consistent adoption of new tools, and maintaining accurate records across multiple departments. They must coordinate closely with engineering, IT, and quality assurance teams to standardize processes while accommodating unique project needs. Effective communication, training programs, and regular audits are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth integration of new configuration management practices.

Since September 2009, Whitecap has experienced remarkable growth, increasing production from 850 boe/d to over 365,000 boe/d. We have unconventional and conventional assets exclusively focused in Western Canada and the asset base includes the Weyburn EOR Project. As a majority owner and operator of the Weyburn EOR Project, annually we safely sequester approximately 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 making it a unique project within our portfolio. We currently employ 1,200 people, including our valued contract staff.

At Whitecap, our corporate culture is entrepreneurial. We strive to create a culture of purpose and integrity where initiative and innovation are encouraged and valued. Our corporate philosophy allows us to develop skills, collaborate alongside our teammates, and ultimately have a fulfilling career.

About the Role

Whitecap Resources is looking for a GIS Analyst to help manage, upgrade, and evolve our enterprise GIS platform. This role owns the health of our ArcGIS Enterprise architecture and our FME Flow automation environment, and plays a lead part in planning and executing platform upgrades across multiple environments. You'll work closely with IT, data, and business stakeholders to keep our spatial platforms secure, current, and running smoothly, while also supporting the applications our teams use every day - from Experience Builder apps to dashboards and story maps.

This is a hands-on technical role for someone comfortable working across the full ArcGIS Enterprise stack, FME Flow/Form, and infrastructure-as-code tooling, who enjoys solving problems that span systems administration, automation, and application delivery.

What you will do:

ArcGIS Enterprise Administration & Architecture

  • Administer and maintain the ArcGIS Enterprise deployment, including Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, and the Data Store

  • Plan, document, and evolve the ArcGIS Enterprise architecture as usage, licensing, and business needs change

  • Manage and monitor services through ArcGIS Server Manager and Portal, including publishing, service optimization, and troubleshooting

  • Lead or support ArcGIS Enterprise upgrades and patching cycles, including validation and rollback planning

Automation & Infrastructure

  • Own and maintain Chef cookbooks used to automate ArcGIS upgrades and configuration across environments

  • Manage FME Flow (Server) and FME Form, including engine management, scaling, scheduling, and workspace deployment

  • Maintain consistency and promote changes across development, test/staging, and production environments

  • Troubleshoot infrastructure and configuration issues across the GIS technology stack

Application Support & Delivery

  • Build, configure, and support applications using ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Dashboards, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and ArcGIS Hub/Sites

  • Partner with GIS analysts and business units to design and deliver web maps and apps that meet reporting and operational needs

  • Support day-to-day service requests, permissions, and content management within Portal

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Document architecture, standard operating procedures, and upgrade/rollback runbooks

  • Work with IT/infrastructure teams on server, network, and security requirements affecting the GIS environment

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior GIS staff as needed

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience administering ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal, Server, Data Store), including architecture planning and upgrades

  • Practical experience with FME Flow (Server) and FME Form, including engine management, workspace scheduling, and automation

  • Experience using Chef cookbooks (or comparable configuration-management/IaC tooling) to automate ArcGIS upgrades and deployments

  • Demonstrated experience managing GIS resources across multiple environments (dev/test/prod)

  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Server Manager and Portal administration, including service publishing and troubleshooting

  • Experience building or supporting apps in ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Sites/Hub, StoryMaps, and Dashboards

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across GIS software, Windows/Linux server environments, and networking basics as they relate to GIS services

  • Clear written communication for documentation and cross-team collaboration

Nice to Have

  • Esri technical certifications (e.g., ArcGIS Enterprise Administration)

  • Experience with Python (ArcPy, arcgis Python API) for automation and scripting

  • Exposure to cloud-hosted ArcGIS Enterprise deployments (AWS/Azure) or ArcGIS Online

  • Familiarity with SQL Server/PostgreSQL and enterprise geodatabase management

  • Prior experience in [industry - e.g., utilities, oil & gas, municipal government]
