How much do condensed matter physics jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for condensed matter physics in the United States is $35.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $48.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical responsibilities and daily tasks for a professional in Condensed Matter Physics?

Professionals in Condensed Matter Physics spend much of their time conducting experiments or simulations, analyzing complex data, and developing theoretical models to explain physical phenomena in materials. They often work as part of multidisciplinary teams in academic, governmental, or industrial research environments, and regular responsibilities may include writing and presenting research findings, collaborating with engineers or chemists, and applying for research grants. Depending on the setting, involvement in teaching, mentoring junior researchers, or managing laboratory equipment is also common. The work is dynamic and varied, often requiring adaptability as research progresses and new discoveries are made.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Condensed Matter Physics position, and why are they important?

To excel in Condensed Matter Physics, you need a solid background in physics or a related field, often supported by a PhD, with strong analytical, mathematical, and experimental skills. Familiarity with computational software (such as MATLAB or Python), laboratory equipment, and advanced simulation tools is valuable, and experience with scientific publishing or grant writing can be advantageous. Attention to detail, critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication are key soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for driving research innovation, solving complex problems, and working effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

What is a Condensed Matter Physics job?

A Condensed Matter Physics job involves studying the physical properties of solid and liquid materials, such as superconductors, semiconductors, and magnetic systems. Researchers in this field explore how atoms and electrons interact to develop new materials and technologies. These jobs can be in academia, government labs, or industry, working on applications in electronics, quantum computing, and nanotechnology. Typical roles include theoretical modeling, experimental measurements, and materials design.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Eberly College of Science, Department of Physics at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking to fill two postdoctoral positions in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. The successful candidate will actively engage in Prof. Cui-Zu Chang's research program (https://sites.psu.edu/changresearch/), which focuses on exploring quantum phenomena in films and heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The projects in Cui-Zu's group encompass a range of techniques, including MBE growth, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S), nanoscale device fabrication, mechanical exfoliation, and dilution electrical transport measurements. We are seeking an ideal candidate with expertise in at least one of these areas.
Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics or related fields. Applications must be submitted electronically and include a cover letter, CV, and statement of research interests. Applicants should arrange for three reference letters to be submitted to physicsapply@psu.edu indicating the appropriate job number in the subject line. This is a limited term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of refunding. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a suitable candidate is found.
