How much do concrete scanning jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for concrete scanning in the United States is $20.37, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $23.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is concrete scanning and why is it important?

Concrete scanning is a non-destructive testing method used to detect objects, voids, and structural features within concrete structures. Using technologies like ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or X-ray imaging, technicians can locate rebar, post-tension cables, pipes, and other embedded elements before drilling, cutting, or coring. This process is crucial to prevent accidental damage to critical components, reduce safety risks, and avoid costly repairs during construction or renovation projects.

What is the difference between Concrete Scanning vs Concrete Coring?

AspectConcrete ScanningConcrete Coring
PurposeDetects embedded objects and rebar within concreteDrills into concrete to create core samples
CredentialsTypically requires NDT certifications and trainingRequires core drilling certifications and safety training
Work EnvironmentOn construction sites, inspecting existing structuresOn-site, performing drilling operations on concrete surfaces
Tools UsedGround Penetrating Radar (GPR), ultrasonic scannersCore drills, diamond-tipped bits

Concrete Scanning involves non-destructive detection of embedded objects within concrete, while Concrete Coring involves physically drilling into concrete to obtain samples. Both roles require specialized certifications and are performed in similar construction environments, but they serve different purposes in construction and inspection projects.

What are some common challenges faced by concrete scanning technicians on job sites?

Concrete scanning technicians often encounter challenges such as working in confined or cluttered spaces, interpreting complex scan data, and managing project deadlines. They must carefully coordinate with construction teams to avoid delays and ensure safety protocols are followed, especially when scanning active sites. Additionally, technicians need to stay up-to-date with advances in scanning technology and adjust to varying site conditions, such as noise, weather, and surface irregularities, which can affect scan accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Concrete Scanning Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Concrete Scanning Technician, you need a solid understanding of construction practices, blueprint reading, and experience with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or similar scanning technologies, often supported by relevant certifications. Proficiency with GPR equipment, data interpretation software, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate identification of embedded objects, minimize risks on job sites, and facilitate clear reporting to project stakeholders.
