What is a concrete form?

Concrete form workers, also known as concrete form setters or formwork carpenters, are construction professionals who build and assemble the molds (forms) that hold wet concrete in place until it hardens. They measure, cut, and assemble materials like wood, metal, or plastic to create forms for foundations, walls, columns, and other structures. These workers play a crucial role in ensuring that concrete structures are shaped correctly and maintain their structural integrity.

What does a concrete formworker do?

In a concrete form role, your daily tasks usually involve setting up and taking down the forms that shape poured concrete for foundations, walls, or other structures. You'll read blueprints or plans, measure and cut materials, assemble formwork, and ensure proper alignment and support for the concrete pour. Collaboration with other team members, such as concrete finishers and laborers, is essential to ensure safety and accuracy. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and a strong understanding of construction procedures are key to success in this position.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a concrete formworker?

To thrive as a Concrete Formworker, you need a solid understanding of concrete construction techniques, blueprint reading, and basic carpentry, often gained through an apprenticeship or on-the-job training. Familiarity with power tools, measuring devices, and safety equipment like harnesses is important, along with OSHA safety certification. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and teamwork make someone stand out in this role. These skills are essential to ensure structures are built accurately, safely, and efficiently, meeting project specifications and deadlines.
