Computer Technician information

What is a computer technician?

As a Computer Technician, your responsibilities and duties include ensuring that the computer software and hardware used by employees of your company is functioning well and is up to date. You will run software updates and install new software, as needed. You may also repair hardware, make updates to it, and set up new machines for new employees. Your job is to troubleshoot any technical issues with the computers used by company employees so that they can complete their jobs with maximum efficiency. The help you provide is essential in improving the company bottom line.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Technician, you need strong troubleshooting abilities, a solid understanding of hardware and software, and typically at least a CompTIA A+ certification or equivalent experience. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, imaging software, and operating systems like Windows, macOS, and Linux is important. Excellent customer service, patience, and clear communication help technicians effectively interact with users and resolve issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently diagnosing problems, providing reliable solutions, and ensuring user satisfaction in technical support environments.

What are some common challenges computer technicians face when troubleshooting hardware and software issues?

Computer Technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing intermittent hardware failures, resolving compatibility issues between new and legacy systems, and dealing with unclear problem descriptions from users. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving technology and security threats requires continuous learning. Effective communication and patience are key, as technicians frequently collaborate with non-technical staff to explain solutions and ensure minimal downtime.

Do you need a degree to be a computer technician?

A degree is not strictly required to become a computer technician, but many employers prefer candidates with postsecondary education or certifications such as CompTIA A+. Practical skills, hands-on experience, and knowledge of hardware, software, and troubleshooting are often more important than formal degrees in this field.

How much is the salary of a computer technician?

The average salary of a computer technician in the United States typically ranges from $35,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced technicians with specialized skills can earn higher wages, especially in technical environments requiring troubleshooting and hardware or software support.

Job description

INTERMEDIATE CAD/BIM Tech

Come grow with us!

Are you an experienced CAD/BIM Technician excited to build your career in drafting, BIM and electrical design? This is an intermediate role with real growth opportunities, challenging projects, and a team that actually enjoys working together. If you’re curious, detail-oriented, tech-savvy, and the kind of person who genuinely likes learning new things, keep reading.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll support our engineering and design teams by creating, modifying, and coordinating accurate electrical drawings using AutoCad and Revit. This is a mid-level technical role with the potential for you to develop your technical leadership abilities. Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Leading the creation and modification of electrical drawings, schematics, and BIM models
  • Coordinating drafting activities with engineers, project managers, and other disciplines
  • Reviewing drawings and documentation for accuracy, quality, and compliance
  • Helping identify and resolve coordination or drafting issues
  • Managing your own timelines and project deliverables
  • Supporting and mentoring junior and intermediate production team members
  • Contributing ideas that improve drafting workflows and team efficiency
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external consultants on project coordination

This role is ideal for someone ready to take the next step from pure production work into a more collaborative and leadership-oriented technical role.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll thrive here if you:

  • Have 3+ years of relevant CAD/BIM or drafting experience in consulting engineering or a related industry
  • Have strong proficiency in CAD (and Revit) software
  • Understand electrical building systems and technical detailing
  • Take pride in producing accurate, organized, high-quality work
  • Can balance independence with collaboration
  • Enjoy helping and mentoring teammates
  • Like solving problems and improving processes
  • Stay curious and continue learning new technologies and industry trends.
  • Get energized by fast-paced technically complex work.

Bonus points if you have experience with:

  • AGi32
  • Visual lighting software
  • BIM coordination
  • MS Office and project collaboration tools

The Designcore Vibe

We’re not a giant corporate machine with 14 layers of approval to move a text box. We’re a collaborative team of engineers, designers, technologists, and problem-solvers who care about doing great work and being good humans. That means:

  • Leaders who actually mentor people
  • A team environment where questions are encouraged
  • Interesting projects with real responsibility
  • Opportunities to grow your career over time
  • Less ego, more collaboration
  • A workplace where people genuinely support each other

At Designcore, careers have pathways. CAD/BIM Technicians can grow into more senior technical, design, and BIM leadership roles over time.

Why You Might Love It Here

  • Competitive compensation
  • Supportive team culture
  • Career development opportunities
  • Interesting and technically challenging work
  • Modern office environment
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • A team that values initiative, curiosity, and humour
