Zayo is seeking a Damage Prevention Technician I and II to join our Damage Prevention team in this entry-level position. Under close supervision, our Damage Prevention Technicians will learn and perform routine techniques of underground facility location. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult.

NOTE/Seattle Location:

Candidates are required to reside within an hour commute of the listed location: Seattle.
REQUIREMENT: Oil & Gas Experience is not counted as locating experience.
Damage Prevention Tech I: 6 mos Fiber locating experience is required.
Damage Prevention Tech II: 2 yrs Fiber locating experience is required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Troubleshooting network equipment, removing/replacing defective equipment, and working with appropriate resources to isolate and ultimately restore the network. 

  • Analyzing blueprints to determine where construction projects will take place.

  • Identifying and mapping location and depth of utilities for fiber optic cable and underground utilities. 

  • Documenting interactions, site information and utilities in organizational software. 

  • Communicating with clients, engineers and management. 

  • Using a variety of techniques (electrical, magnetic, GPS, blueprint analysis, and/or radar) to measure utilities. 

  • Proactively identifying potential problem areas in order to ensure the integrity of the network and company. 

  • Pinpointing the coordinates of lines using GPS or surveying equipment. 

  • Asset management processes and replenishment of on-site/truck materials. 

  • Coordinating shipping and receiving of company and customer materials. 

  • Maintaining tools, test sets, and all network equipment. 

  • Maintaining network/site security, cleanliness, and follow all policies related to company property. 

  • Inspecting cabinets, buried cable, construction sites, and other outdoor facilities in various environments, weather conditions, temperatures, exposed to local flora and fauna. 

  • Engaging, monitoring, and evaluating the performance of vendor/contractors completing work on behalf of the company. 

  • Operating in both individual and team environments, both within this team and interacting with other teams, working together to achieve common goals. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Damage Prevention Tech I: Must have, at least, 6 mos locating experience.
    Damage Prevention Tech II: Must have, at least, 2 yrs locating experience. 

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required. 

  • Previous experience in site development, underground installations, utility locating, fiber optic cable builds, preferred. 

  • Proficiency using computer, cell phone, test equipment, Microsoft Windows operating system, and Office applications. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Operate on-call 24/7/365 on a rotating schedule, including standby, call out, dispatch, and overtime, as required by the business, including some travel, as needed. 

  • Must follow all personal safety policies and procedures. 

  • Must be able to maintain eligibility to operate a company issued vehicle per our policy (no more than 2 moving violations within the past 3 years); this includes possession of a state-issued driver's license for the state in which you live.

  • Must have a cell phone. 

  • Regularly lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds and move them clear of the job site.

Damage Prevention Tech I:

Estimated Base Pay Range: $20.63 - $27.50 USD/hour.
Damage Prevention Tech II:

Estimated Base Pay Range: $24.75 - $33.00 USD/hour.

The base pay range shown is a guideline and reasonable estimate for this role. It takes into account the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions. Actual compensation offered may vary from the posted range based upon geographic location, work experience, skill level, certifications, and other business and organizational needs. 

Additionally, this position may be eligible for certain benefits, such as health insurance and 401(k).
