What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Computer Systems Validation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Computer Systems Validation, you need a solid understanding of regulatory requirements (such as FDA or EMA guidelines), software development life cycles, and risk management, often supported by a degree in life sciences, IT, or engineering. Experience with validation frameworks, documentation tools, and systems like GAMP 5 and knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11 compliance are typically required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication set professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure validated systems are compliant, reliable, and support organizational quality and regulatory objectives.

What are some common challenges faced in a Computer Systems Validation (CSV) role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Computer Systems Validation often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulatory requirements, managing documentation for multiple systems, and coordinating with cross-functional teams. Staying updated through regular training and industry resources helps address compliance changes. Clear communication and collaboration with IT, Quality Assurance, and business stakeholders are essential for efficient validation processes. Utilizing validation lifecycle management tools and standardized templates can also streamline documentation and reduce errors.

What is computer systems validation?

Computer systems validation (CSV) is the process of ensuring that computer-based systems used in regulated industries, like pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, perform their intended functions consistently and reliably. This process involves documenting and testing systems to confirm they meet regulatory requirements, such as those set by the FDA. The goal is to ensure data integrity, product quality, and patient safety by minimizing the risk of system errors or failures. CSV typically includes activities like risk assessment, test planning, execution, and maintaining thorough records for audits.

What is the difference between Computer Systems Validation vs Quality Assurance Specialist?

AspectComputer Systems ValidationQuality Assurance Specialist
CertificationsGAMP, CSV-specific trainingISO 9001, Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentRegulated industries like pharma, biotechManufacturing, software, service sectors
Primary FocusEnsuring computer systems meet regulatory standardsEnsuring overall product/service quality
Common UsageValidation of software, hardware in complianceProcess audits, quality improvement

Computer Systems Validation and Quality Assurance Specialist roles overlap in ensuring compliance and quality. However, CSV focuses specifically on validating computer systems to meet regulatory standards, especially in pharma and biotech industries. Quality Assurance Specialists have a broader scope, overseeing overall quality processes across various sectors. Both roles require similar certifications and work environments but differ in their primary objectives and specific tasks.

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE

AMD is seeking a Sr. Manager AI Systems Validation Architect to provide companylevel technical leadership in defining how AMD validates AI platforms as complete, deployable solutions. This highly technical and people management role is responsible for validation architecture across server, rack, and clusterscale AI systems. The role shapes validation strategy at the architectural level, ensuring alignment across CPU, GPU, networking, system architecture, and software domains.

In addition to broad technical leadership, this candidate will lead and manage a small team of senior architects, amplifying impact through direct architectural ownership, technical direction, and mentorship.

This position is expected to be handson when needed, influence multiple organizations, guide longterm technical direction, and serve as a recognized authority in systemlevel validation architecture for AMD’s AI platforms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Architect validation strategies for:
    • Serverlevel AI platforms (CPU, GPU, memory, IO, firmware, and system software)
    • Racklevel systems (power delivery, thermals, fabric, and multinode interactions)
    • Clusterlevel deployments (scaleout behavior, networking, orchestration, and resilience)
  • Lead and manage a small team of senior architects, providing technical direction, prioritization, and growth opportunities.
  • Lead AI-driven initiatives to build plans, proof-of-concepts, test content, etc.
  • Collaborate with cross-domain engineers and architects to develop validation plans, and help the teams to write and review test content (SW) when needed.
  • Partner with AMD domain experts across:
    • CPU and GPU architecture and validation
    • Networking and fabric
    • Memory, IO, and storage subsystems
    • Platform firmware and system software
    • Software and automation
  • Lead and guide complex, crossdomain debug efforts spanning silicon, firmware, system software, and hardware platforms.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and reference point for other architects and validation leaders.
  • Represent validation architecture in crossfunctional technical forums and executivelevel discussions.
  • Contribute to the evolution of AMD’s validation methodologies, frameworks, and best practices.

THE PERSON

The successful candidate is a recognized technical leader with deep experience in systemlevel validation, debug, and architectural leadership. You are equally comfortable guiding a small team of senior architects and diving handson into the most complex systemlevel problems when needed and enjoy being able to write scripts/SW to help root-cause issues, complement test content or unblock execution of a validation plan.

You bring strong technical judgment, a systems mindset, and the ability to scale impact through both architectural authority and people leadership.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive experience in server or data center platform architecture and/or validation.
  • Strong understanding of AI system architectures, including CPU, GPU, networking, and software stacks.
  • Proven ability to lead small teams of senior technical contributors while maintaining personal architectural impact.
  • Several years of experience with scripting, automation, and/or testcontent development.
  • Demonstrated success defining systemlevel validation strategies across multiple domains.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction across organizations without relying solely on direct authority.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including executivelevel technical communication.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field required
  • Advanced degree or equivalent industry experience preferred
