What is computer software engineering?

Computer software engineering is a branch of engineering focused on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications and systems. Software engineers use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to create software that meets user needs. They often work on everything from mobile apps to large-scale enterprise systems, collaborating with other engineers, designers, and stakeholders. The field requires continuous learning due to rapidly evolving technologies and methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer software engineer?

To thrive as a Computer Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid foundation in computer science, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with development tools, integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications in specific languages or frameworks are important. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability help engineers collaborate effectively and respond to evolving project needs. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable, efficient software solutions.

What are some common challenges computer software engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Computer software engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing complex codebases, and ensuring consistent documentation. Navigating these challenges requires strong communication skills, effective use of version control systems, and familiarity with agile methodologies. Additionally, engineers must balance meeting project deadlines with maintaining code quality and adapting to evolving requirements, making time management and adaptability crucial skills in this role.

What is the difference between Computer Software Engineering vs Computer Software Development?

AspectComputer Software EngineeringComputer Software Development
CredentialsBachelor's in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; certifications like Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP)Bachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; certifications less common
Work EnvironmentDesigning, analyzing, and managing software projects; often involved in system architectureWriting, testing, and debugging code; focused on creating software applications
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, consulting firms, and large organizations for complex projectsCommon across startups, tech firms, and software companies for product development

While both roles involve software creation, Computer Software Engineering emphasizes designing and managing software systems, whereas Computer Software Development focuses on coding and implementing software solutions. Job description

Being at the forefront of innovation is exciting and leading transformation in a large global organization is a role that many people aspire to. If this is you, we have a transformational role in our newly developed platform services organization. We’re looking for a transformational leader in our technology services hub focused on marketing technologies.

The Director, Software Engineering is a hands-on engineering leader accountable for owning a flagship MarTech product line end to end, such as the Consumer Data Service (CDS) or Global Asset Management (GAM), from discovery and design through delivery, operation and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Senior Director / Head of Engineering, this leader directs the full product engineering team, partners closely with Product Management, Data Services and global marketing stakeholders, and ensures the platform is reliable, scalable and delivering measurable business value across all regions. This is an AI-native engineering role: the leader is expected to drive agentic, AI-accelerated delivery and to build the data, security and cost disciplines the modern MarTech stack now requires.

What You’ll Do for Us:

Own end-to-end the engineering and delivery of a large-scale MarTech product (e.g., CDS or GAM), covering the full lifecycle from concept and architecture through build, launch, run, and continuous improvement.

Lead and collaborate with a high-performing product engineering team of full-stack engineers, architects, and product owners across global and regional delivery centers, comprising in-house and strategic vendor talent.

Deliver high-quality engineering for consumer experiences (websites, web services, apps) and the MarTech & AdTech platform stack, including Owned Platforms, Adobe Experience Cloud, software development tools, Trade Desk, Media Math, Digital Asset Management, and social listening & publishing.

Define and maintain the product technology roadmap, translating Coca-Cola brand marketing strategies into engineering priorities in partnership with teams across the globe.

Coach and develop the next generation of engineering talent, setting clear standards for technical excellence, accountability, and outcome ownership within the product team.

Manage relationships with external engineering partners and third-party products that integrate with the platform, ensuring quality, security, and value.

Act as the thought leader and go-to expert for your product domain across architecture, agile software development, large-scale deployments, and media & content supply chain technology.

Communicate with marketing stakeholders on key initiatives, including new and emerging technologies (AI/GenAI), project status, progress, risks, and dependencies.

Serve as a trusted advisor to product managers, business partners, and cross-functional stakeholders, maintaining high levels of visibility, efficiency, and collaboration.

Partner with Data Services & Engineering on the Marketing Data Lake, 1st party consumer data, and consumer identity resolution that power the product.

Champion modern engineering practices: CI/CD automation, observability, platform reliability (SRE/SLOs), and the responsible, governed adoption of AI within the product.

Drive AI-native engineering: lead the shift from manual coding to agentic, AI-velocity development, raising team throughput and quality while keeping human oversight and code-review rigor.

Evolve the data foundation: extend the product data stack beyond SQL and NoSQL to vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) that power personalization, search, and grounded AI experiences.

Own AI-era security and trust: design for emerging risks including prompt injection, data poisoning, and model hallucination, alongside traditional application security, with clear guardrails and human-in-the-loop governance.

Manage AI cost and efficiency: apply FinOps discipline to AI workloads, including token-overhead management, semantic caching, and the right balance of central cloud and edge computer. Build strong relationships with agency partners and support the Marketing Transformation Office agenda.

Qualifications & Requirements

15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5+ years building high-impact consumer-facing digital websites/apps and at least 8+ years designing, developing, and implementing enterprise-grade MarTech stacks. A technologist at heart who is ready to be hands-on to help the team in a crunch.

Proven product ownership: demonstrated success leading a product end-to-end within a modern Product Operating Model, accountable for outcomes rather than project completion.

Team leadership: experience leading globally distributed engineering teams of a mixed base of in-house engineers and strategic vendor employees, with a track record of building, coaching and retaining talent.

MarTech & AdTech credibility: strong grasp of the ecosystem around 1st party consumer data, consumer identity resolution, and AdTech.

Cloud & DevOps depth: technical skills and experience with public/private cloud PaaS or IaaS (AWS or Azure) and DevOps methodologies, including CI/CD pipelines for test, build, and deployment automation.

AI-native engineering (preferred): hands-on familiarity with agentic and AI-assisted development, LLM integration and RAG patterns, vector databases, and edge compute (e.g., WASM, Rust); plus the security (prompt injection, data poisoning) and cost (token FinOps, semantic caching) disciplines the AI-native stack requires.

Communication: exceptional written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify difficult technology concepts into clear language for marketers and executives worldwide.

Leadership presence: an inspiring and fun leader who builds rapport, drives collaboration across regions, and engages credibly from architecture reviews to executive conversations.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or related field required; advanced degree preferred. An equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and demonstrated experience is also considered.

What We’ll Do for You
  • Exposure to World-Class Leaders: Availability to global technology leaders will expand your network and expose you to emerging technologies and techniques.

  • Global Connections: Allows you to develop, enhance, and maintain global connections that allow us to move faster and learn from others.

  • Agile Work Environment: We embrace agile, with management that believes in removing barriers, so you are empowered to experiment, iterate, and innovate
