What is a computer science internship 2nd year?

Computer Science Internship 2nd Year positions are internship opportunities designed for students who have completed their second year of a computer science degree. These internships typically allow students to gain practical experience in areas such as software development, data analysis, or IT support. Interns work under the supervision of experienced professionals and often contribute to real-world projects. These roles help students apply classroom knowledge, build technical skills, and enhance their resumes for future career opportunities.

What does a computer science intern in their second year do?

Second-year computer science interns are typically assigned to foundational yet meaningful projects such as debugging existing code, developing simple features, writing test cases, or assisting with documentation. You'll often work as part of a team under the guidance of more senior engineers, collaborating during stand-ups and code reviews. These experiences help you build practical coding skills, understand industry workflows, and learn effective teamwork in a professional setting. Over time, you may be given more responsibility as you demonstrate your abilities.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a computer science intern in the second year?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern in your second year, you generally need foundational programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of software development tools, and exposure to collaborative platforms such as GitHub or JIRA are commonly expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork make a candidate stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively contributing to projects, adapting to real-world workflows, and growing professionally in a supportive team environment.

Job description

The Voloridge Ascend Program brings together a select group of early undergraduate and early-stage Ph.D. students to work closely with our researchers, engineers, and traders, gaining exposure to how we approach research, modeling, and system design in a trading environment. Through hands-on sessions and a collaborative simulation, you'll explore how ideas from mathematics, physics, computer science, and related quantitative disciplines are applied to complex, evolving systems.

Admission is highly competitive, with only 20 participants selected for each cohort. Throughout the program, participants will hear directly from and receive hands-on mentorship from some of Voloridge's most senior researchers and engineers. You'll participate in technical sessions, collaborative problem-solving activities, and a team-based competition designed to challenge your analytical thinking and technical creativity while providing a firsthand look at how our teams approach difficult research problems.

There's no expectation of prior finance knowledge. We're looking for students who enjoy thinking deeply, questioning assumptions, and building from first principles. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of what technical research looks like in practice, and how they might fit into it.

Program Dates:

  • January 11-14, 2027

Program Logistics:

  • Travel to and from the program will be arranged and fully covered by Voloridge.
  • Hotel accommodations will be provided for the duration of the program.
  • Participants will receive a daily stipend during the program.

Eligibility:

  • First and second-year undergraduate students, or early-stage Ph.D. students
  • Pursuit of a degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline
  • Demonstrated interest in solving challenging technical problems
  • One letter of recommendation from a professor or faculty advisor submitted with the application

This application will be open until October 31, 2026.
