Description

ARA’s IntraRisk Group is seeking a staff scientist to work with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement engineering computer models for high wind hazards, structural response, and loss estimation. The successful candidate for this position will have a strong background in hurricane, flood, and/or tornado modeling and interest in using such models for insured loss estimation.

The IntraRisk Group is based in Raleigh, NC. Remote work may be considered for the right candidate.

What you will do as a staff scientist:

  • Develop and use engineering computer codes such as wind/storm surge/wave hazard models and engineering fragility models for wind loading effects.
  • Process and interpret property insurance exposure data for input to HurLoss , ARA’s hurricane catastrophe loss model.
  • Work with end users to understand how HurLoss can be used to support their catastrophe modeling needs.
  • Apply probability and statistics in engineering.
  • Support multiple projects and interact with current and prospective clients.
  • Document work and write technical reports.

Staff scientist required skills:

  • Basic understanding and use of building codes/analysis methods.
  • Strong problem‑solving, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with collaborators and ask for assistance when needed.
  • Attention to detail and desire to learn from mentors.
  • Strong self‑starter with the ability to pick up new technologies quickly.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Agility, poise, focus, and communication skills are a must.
  • Familiarity with catastrophe modeling and property insurance risk modeling concepts is preferred.

Staff scientist position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil/Structural Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience; advanced degree may be considered in fulfillment of the experience requirement.
  • At least one course in computer programming and relevant experience in developing computer codes (e.g., FORTRAN, C, C++, and/or Python) for natural hazard risk assessment.
  • Candidates selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
